Women's Reserve Team Draws Corktown AFC II 2-2
HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 14, 2021)- The Detroit City FC UWS 2 team battled a tough Corktown AFC UWS 2 that resulted in a 2-2 draw from Keyworth Stadium.
Detroit City opened up the game a little slow and found themselves having a tough time possessing the ball in the midfield. With Corktown AFC controlling the ball mainly in the midfield and the tempo of the game, DCFC struggled to find and create chances for themselves.
After a diving breakaway save from #30 Goalkeeper Gabrielle Schriver, Detroit City turned their play around. They began to create chances by forcing Corktown AFC to lose the ball and find open runners down the sideline and in the middle of the field. Forward #21 Kayla Addison started to break down defenders; however, her shots would not be on target.
Corktown broke the tie in the 28 minute with a breakaway goal by Alexa Sabbagh.
DCFC would respond to that goal just minutes later as #18 Lilian Lucas would have a shot towards the bottom left corner. Unfortunately, that strike would be saved.
Despite being down at the half, a bright spot for the Le Rouge was defender #3 Brooke Honeycutt. She played very well in the back in the first half as she won many fifty-fifty balls and found open teammates after winning the ball. She was also able to push up at times to give the Le Rouge another look.
Detroit City would start the second half off with a bang. Just two minutes into the half, #33 Midfielder Hannah Becker scored a stunning goal that went to the top right corner from just outside the 18-box.
Becker’s goal was exactly what DCFC needed as they began to play with more confidence and started to control the tempo of the game more and more. After controlling possession for most of the half, a strong challenge by #30 Schriver resulted in a penalty for Corktown AFC. Alexa Sabbagh would take advantage of the opportunity and score her second goal of the match.
Corktown slowed the tempo down after their goal. With just minutes left and DCFC down a score, it looked as if the team was going to lose their first game of the season. However, #3 Honeycutt had other ideas. She took control of the ball, dribbled past a defender, and let her strike go towards the top left corner from the opposite side of the 18-box. The breathtaking goal took the life out of Corktown AFC and brought the crowd to their feet.
After her amazing goal and gritty game in the back, Brooke Honeycutt earned the Google Fi Woman of the Match.

LIVONIA, MI (May 29, 2021) – Detroit City FC successfully built on their strong start to Midwest Premier League play on Saturday as they defeated Livonia City FC 5-0 on the road at Schoolcraft college. Right from the start, it was apparent that Le Rouge just wanted this one more tonight as they were first to every ball and were ruthless in 50/50 situations.
The scoring for Detroit City began in the 13th minute when #5 Caio Mazzo played a beautiful ball over the top and into the path of #8 Brady Walker who took it incredibly well and unleashed a rocket past the Livonia keeper with confidence. Then, 25 minutes later, Detroit City would double their advantage due to some quick thinking from #17 Benedek Tanyi who was first to pounce on a rebound from the Livonia keeper.
The Detroit City FC squad did not take their foot off of the gas with the 2-0 lead, coming out of the half with the same intensity that got them to such a lead and in the 54th minute #18 Shion Soga was taken down in the box following some very quick footwork, he then stepped up and calmly slotted home the PK. After this goal, six changes were made, every player listed on the team sheet got minutes this evening and it was very nice to see paired with the dominating performance.
The goals didn’t stop there, though. In minute 82 #8 Brady Walker beat a man on the edge of the box with some fancy skills and rifled home a rocket past the Livonia keeper at the near post for his second goal of the night to make it 4-0 and just to put the cherry on top, substitute #77 Sanad Yahya scored in stoppage time with a peach of a curler from the edge of the box to bring us to our final 5-0.
This win moves Detroit City FC U23 to (2-0-0) and we will next see them in action on June 5 at 4 pm ET at Keyworth Stadium when they host the West Michigan Bearings. This loss saw Livonia City FC drop to (0-2-3) as they still search for their first win of the season, they next take on Lake St. Clair FC on June 6 at 4 pm ET.
