MUSKEGON, MI (June 6, 2021) - Detroit City Football Club traveled to Muskegon on Saturday for a rematch against the Muskegon Risers in their fifth game of the 2021 UWS campaign.
In what turned out to be an impressive offensive showing from the Detroit City FC women, Muskegon proved unable to deal with City’s pressure and possession-based style of play.
Just four minutes into the match, #25 Rachel Philpotts was able to start the scoring for City after a corner kick that was sent in came loose in the box and she was the first to react to the loose ball.
Ten minutes later, City brilliantly worked the ball through the midfield and #10 Marlee Taylor found #16 Grace Philpotts open and sprinting down the left side of the pitch. Grace carried the ball into the box and unleashed a shot across goal scoring high at the far post.
In the next 10 minute stretch, City would net four goals past Muskegon. First, #21 Kayla Addison, who had been extremely busy up until this point pressuring the Muskegon backline, corralled an attempted clearance and sent the ball in the back of the net. In the 20th minute, #27 Melanie Forbes scored her first of the match after reacting quickly to another loose ball in the box and scoring from up close. Only a minute later the ball would become loose in the Muskegon box again after relentless offensive pressure from City. This time, Captain #11 Elisa Baeron was there to send the ball home and put Le Rouge up by five goals. And then not two minutes later, #28 Christina Torres gained possession of the ball on top of the box and rifled her shot into a low corner for City’s sixth goal of the match.
And City still wasn’t done scoring in the first half. With Taylor progressing the ball through the midfield, she saw a progressive run from Forbes splitting the Muskegon backline. Taylor played a perfectly weighted through ball and Forbes slotted it into the net to make the scoreline 7-0 in the 42nd minute.
While the second half didn’t see quite as many goals, Forbes would continue her high impressive scoring performance with goals in minutes 49, 58, and 84.
All told, the match finished 10-0 in favor of Detroit City FC.
