HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 12, 2021) - Detroit City Football Club returned to Keyworth Stadium on Saturday for a rematch against Corktown AFC in their sixth game of the 2021 UWS campaign.

Corktown AFC took an early lead in this rematch with #13 Meike Ingles sending in a dangerous cross which was redirected into the back of the net by #7 Maddy Schupbach.

The visitors were content to largely sit back after their first goal and take their chances when they could. And despite plenty of City possession, in the 34th minute, Schupbach would score another goal to put Corktown up 2-0. The chance came when a deflected City clearance fell to her on top of the box, and she put her long range shot into the top corner.

Le Rouge created plenty of chances the rest of the first half through possession and earned numerous corner kicks, but were unable to score any goals for themselves.

Sam Piraine’s side came into the second half with cleaner passing and more quality chances on offense. The pressure mounted in the 53rd minute when some quick passing led to #5 Sarah Huge being taken down just inside of the penalty area by a Corktown defender. #27 Melanie Forbes stepped up to take it and slotted it in the bottom left corner of the net and past the diving Corktown keeper.

City started to make tactical substitutions throughout the second half one of them being #19 Mami Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi was a welcome outlet for City in possession and her movement off the ball caused Corktown to commit defenders to stopping her highly active runs. Multiple times Yamaguchi was taken down on top of the box, but City’s ensuing free kicks didn’t cause any trouble for the Corktown defense.

With pressure alleviating at the end of the match, the Northern Guard Supporter’s section let off their highly recognizable smoke bombs and the wind blew the smoke onto the pitch leading to a smoke delay with the clock approaching 90.

Shortly into the six minutes of stoppage time, City worked one last major chance. The ball was sent in from wide and Corktown’s clearance was sent high into the darkening Hamtramck sky. On top of the box, Yamaguchi eyed the ball as it came down and struck it cleanly towards goal. With the shot destined for the bottom corner, the diving Corktown keeper was able parry the shot out wide with her outstretched gloves.
