HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 5, 2021)- Detroit City FC topped the West Michigan Bearings 3-0 at Keyworth Stadium.
Detroit City FC started the game off strong with constant pressure in the midfield and wing players. The high press caught the West Michigan Bearings off guard, which resulted in many unforced turnovers. After a turnover by the Bearings, #15 Kellan Landefield found himself with a great chance on a breakaway; however, that attempt soared over the bar.
After a forced turnover by DCFC, #18 Shion Soga found a streaking and open Zion Beaton where he ripped a shot to the bottom right corner resulting in a goal 21 minutes in.
The Le Rouge men controlled and dominated the possession throughout the entire first half. In fact, Detroit City dominated the ball so much that the Bearings offense was so stale it resulted in zero shots in the entire first half.
#10 Will Perkins showed why he is the captain and key piece for DCFC in the first half. He demonstrated poise while on the ball, gave constant pressure which resulted in chances for Le Rouge, and allowed no Bearings players to get passed.
The second half started off just the way Detroit City wanted to as halftime substitute #13 Keith Larson scored an incredible left foot goal that was just outside the goalkeeper’s reach in the 51st minute.
With the continuous pressure, DCFC continued to dominate in all aspects of the pitch. The forwards created many opportunities, the midfield controlled tempo and possession, and the defense kept the ball out of the net and out of the final third.
Larson’s pressure and opportunities that he created by making countless runs and getting behind the defense allowed for the Le Rouge men to score yet another goal off a pass from the chest of Larson to hometown midfielder #99 Waseem Muthana as he scored a goal from inside the six-yard box that reached the top right corner.
To go along with the tough and poised play of Will Perkins, Keith Larson truly lit the game up with his play. Larson played with a chip on his shoulder along with high energy as he filled the shoes of Zion Beaton. Larson’s amazing goal and assist earned him the Google Fi Man of the Match.
The key components from the game consisted of the non-stop high pressure from DCFC and the ability to force turnovers and create chances from those turnovers. Every player who stepped on the pitch played in sync and earned the Le Rouge men their third win of the season.
