Women's Second Team Wins Opener In Canton Cup
CANTON, MI (May 29, 2021) – The Detroit City FC UWS 2 side began its first campaign in a winning fashion by defeating Rebels FC 2-1 at Independence Park in Canton, Michigan. The wind played a factor all throughout the match and made it difficult for either team to play long balls over the top.
Detroit City FC was the first to break the deadlock in the 27th minute when #57 Tori Singstock took a shot from an angle that was awkward for the Rebels goalkeeper and she could not get across to it. This lead would only last about fifteen minutes because on the brink of halftime the Rebels equalized through a scramble in the box that was tapped in by their forward, #4 Turner.
Almost immediately after halftime, Le Rouge would find their way ahead in this one as Singstock played a ball to #6 Bri Rogers who tucked it home to give Detroit City FC the lead, this goal would end up being crucial for Le Rouge who would go on to see out the 2-1 victory over the Rebels.
This win moves Detroit City FC to (1-0-0) in UWS 2 play and the loss for Rebels FC moves them to (1-1-0). Detroit City FC’s next match is on Sunday, June 6 at 2 pm ET where they will travel up to Midland to face off against Midland FC, the next time Rebels FC take the pitch is on Saturday, June 5 at 8 pm ET where they face off against AFC Plymouth at Oakland University.

Detroit City FC Tops Corktown AFC 3-0
DETROIT, MI (May 26, 2021) – Detroit City Football Club played the third match of their 2021 UWS season not far from home at the Corner Ballpark in Detroit on Wednesday evening.
Things escalated quickly for the Detroit City offense in this game. After 10 minutes of testing each other, #40 Alia Frederick lofted in a dangerous cross into the box, and #5 Sarah Huge was able to dive in to head it home, putting City up 1-0. Not long after, Corktown was unable to clear a ball in the box, and #24 Kenna White was right there to deftly chip it over the AFC goalkeeper to record an early 2-0 lead.
Despite more chances at both ends, the score would remain 2-0 in the first half of action.
Things were even to begin the second half until City was awarded a free kick just on top of Corktown’s box in the 52nd minute. Second-half sub #31 Tatiana Mason took the kick and placed it in the top right corner to put Detroit City up 3-0 with plenty of game left.
With numerous substitutions for both sides in the second half, Corktown was rarely able to break the midfield press deployed by Le Rouge, which helped them see out the 3-0 scoreline until the final whistle blew.
Detroit City Football Club, now 3-0-0 in UWS, will continue their season back at Keyworth Stadium as they face the Chicago Mustangs on May 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Please review the CDC’s full guidelines here as of May 13, 2021: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html#anchor_1619526673330

DCFC announced last week the addition of MF/F #23 Darwin Espinal to the roster. Espinal previously played for the New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Honduras U23’s. His first match in Rouge and Gold came as a 2nd half substitute @ Michigan Stars 5/22.
Espinal takes the number 23 which was made available by the departure of Pablo Cruz, who has stepped away from the club. DCFC send Cruz, his family – especially his newborn daughter! – with best wishes.

OTHER NEWS OF NOTE
In light of the latest guidance from the CDC and state and local health officials, guests will not be required to wear masks at Keyworth.
We are excited that state restrictions have been lifted on outdoor attendance at sporting events beginning June 1, but to ensure everyone’s comfort, DCFC will phase in a return to the full match day experience. 6/2 and 6/5 matches will have capacity at 50% for the first two matches under the new orders.
Please review the CDC’s full guidelines here as of May 13, 2021: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html#anchor_1619526673330
MEN’S FIRST TEAM ADDS ESPINAL
DCFC announced last week the addition of MF/F #23 Darwin Espinal to the roster. Espinal previously played for the New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Honduras U23’s. His first match in Rouge and Gold came as a 2nd half substitute @ Michigan Stars 5/22.
Espinal takes the number 23 which was made available by the departure of Pablo Cruz, who has stepped away from the club. DCFC send Cruz, his family – especially his newborn daughter! – with best wishes.

Detroit City FC Draws With Michigan Stars 1-1
U-23 Team Wins First Match In Comeback Fashion
It was a hot and humid day at Romeo High School when Detroit City U23s squared off against the Michigan Stars U23s in Le Rouge’s first-ever appearance in the Midwest Premier League.
The first half was pretty evenly contested with the best chance going the way of the Stars who could not capitalize on a one-on-one opportunity. At halftime, head coach Javi Bautista put #7 Bosh Tanyi into the match replacing #23 Jack Zugay but following this substitution it was the Michigan Stars who found the back of the net first after a scramble in the box in minute 48.
It wouldn’t be long until Detroit City FC found the equalizer though as in the 64th minute, newly substituted Tanyi was fouled outside of the box and stepped up and buried the free-kick into the corner.
This 1-1 scoreline wouldn’t last long as in the 73rd minute, #8 Brady Walker would hit an absolutely wonderful volley that hit the crossbar and down past the Stars keeper to give Detroit City FC the 2-1 lead. Chances came few and far between after that one, the closest one of note was a chance that substitute #13 Keith Larson got a foot on but was unable to direct his chip past the goalkeeper.
This win moves Detroit City FC to (1-0-0) and the loss for the Stars drops them down to (2-1-0) as this is their first loss of the Midwest Premier League season. Detroit City FC next faces Livonia City on May 29 and the Star’s next outing in the Midwest Premier League is on May 26 where they also face Livonia City at 7 pm ET at Schoolcraft College.

Women's First Team Wins Season Opener 2-1
Detroit City FC Men Beat 1904 FC 3-1 For Seventh Consecutive Win
CHULA VISTA, CA (May 15, 2021) – Detroit City FC played their third of four straight away matchups against 1904 FC and played to a 3-1 scoreline.
Known for a swift counterattack in the Legends Cup tournament, things didn’t play out the same way in the first half of Saturday night’s rematch between 1904 and Detroit City. Despite enjoying spells of possession, Le Rouge’s biggest chances of the first half came on counterattacks of their own.
In the 23rd minute, City found space on the left and sent in a sizzling cross in front of the goal, but no Detroit attacker was able to reach it in time. Shortly after, City worked another counterattack and #6 Max Todd was able to get a shot on goal, but it was ultimately nothing dangerous for the 1904 goalkeeper. Again looking to attack quickly, #4 Anthony Manning sent a long ball up the pitch to find #19 Pato Botello Faz who beat a defender to register a shot, but it was saved again.
Detroit kept at their offensive pressure as the first half progressed, and it mounted just before halftime. After earning yet another corner kick, #6 Max Todd sent in a perfect ball for #4 Anthony Manning who headed the ball home just before halftime giving City the 1-0 lead they were building towards. All told, City finished the half with four shots on goal out of eight shots total.
1904 were able to create pressure of their own at times, especially to start the second half. Attempting to utilize space on the flanks in the 50th minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman’s tackling forced them back centrally where they were able to quickly release a shot on goal, but #1 Nate Steinwascher was able to cover his far corner.
In the blink of an eye after a 1904 turnover, Le Rouge was able to again transition quickly as #2 Jimmy Filerman played a through ball into the box for Max Todd who was able to hold off his defender and pass the ball centrally for an oncoming #11 Connor Rutz who smashed the ball in the back of the net to put City up 2-0.
1904 kept up their offensive effort in search of a goal, but the city defense made up of #5 Stephen Carroll, #15 Matt Lewis, and #4 Anthony Manning were in the right places at the right times and consistently had the calmness needed to poke the ball out from the attacker’s feet.
And there would be more action to come. In the 84th minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman found himself in the box with only a defender to beat. After faking a cross, he dribbled past his mark and shot the ball into the top post which sent it down and into the goal.
Just after going up 3-0, 1904 spurred an attack and was awarded a penalty for a tackle in the box. #19 Cesar Romero Jr. stepped up to take and sent it into the back of the net with #1 Nate Steinwascher diving the opposite way.
After 90 minutes, the whistle blew and Le Rouge won their fourth game of the NISA Spring Season.
Next up, the Detroit City FC men’s team will return to Michigan for an away visit to Romeo High school to play Michigan Stars FC on Saturday, May 22 at 7:00 pm (ET).
