CHULA VISTA, CA (May 15, 2021) – Detroit City FC played their third of four straight away matchups against 1904 FC and played to a 3-1 scoreline.
Known for a swift counterattack in the Legends Cup tournament, things didn’t play out the same way in the first half of Saturday night’s rematch between 1904 and Detroit City. Despite enjoying spells of possession, Le Rouge’s biggest chances of the first half came on counterattacks of their own.
In the 23rd minute, City found space on the left and sent in a sizzling cross in front of the goal, but no Detroit attacker was able to reach it in time. Shortly after, City worked another counterattack and #6 Max Todd was able to get a shot on goal, but it was ultimately nothing dangerous for the 1904 goalkeeper. Again looking to attack quickly, #4 Anthony Manning sent a long ball up the pitch to find #19 Pato Botello Faz who beat a defender to register a shot, but it was saved again.
Detroit kept at their offensive pressure as the first half progressed, and it mounted just before halftime. After earning yet another corner kick, #6 Max Todd sent in a perfect ball for #4 Anthony Manning who headed the ball home just before halftime giving City the 1-0 lead they were building towards. All told, City finished the half with four shots on goal out of eight shots total.
1904 were able to create pressure of their own at times, especially to start the second half. Attempting to utilize space on the flanks in the 50th minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman’s tackling forced them back centrally where they were able to quickly release a shot on goal, but #1 Nate Steinwascher was able to cover his far corner.
In the blink of an eye after a 1904 turnover, Le Rouge was able to again transition quickly as #2 Jimmy Filerman played a through ball into the box for Max Todd who was able to hold off his defender and pass the ball centrally for an oncoming #11 Connor Rutz who smashed the ball in the back of the net to put City up 2-0.
1904 kept up their offensive effort in search of a goal, but the city defense made up of #5 Stephen Carroll, #15 Matt Lewis, and #4 Anthony Manning were in the right places at the right times and consistently had the calmness needed to poke the ball out from the attacker’s feet.
And there would be more action to come. In the 84th minute, #2 Jimmy Filerman found himself in the box with only a defender to beat. After faking a cross, he dribbled past his mark and shot the ball into the top post which sent it down and into the goal.
Just after going up 3-0, 1904 spurred an attack and was awarded a penalty for a tackle in the box. #19 Cesar Romero Jr. stepped up to take and sent it into the back of the net with #1 Nate Steinwascher diving the opposite way.
After 90 minutes, the whistle blew and Le Rouge won their fourth game of the NISA Spring Season.
