DETROIT — Detroit City Football Club closed out the 2025 USL Championship regular season home schedule with a 1-0 defeat to Loudoun United. Both sides struggled to get going in the attacking third, but a turnover in the first minute of stoppage time led to a Loudoun United opportunity in the box, which they converted into the only goal of the match.
Danny Dichio made a few changes to the starting XI from the squad that beat North Carolina FC last week. Carlos Herrera got the start in net for the second straight game, as Alex Villanueva, Devon Amoo-Mensah, Stephen Carroll, and Michael Bryant make up the back four. In the midfield for this Eastern Conference showdown were Jeciel Cedeño, Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Ryan Williams, and Haruki Yamazaki. The two attackers were the familiar faces of Darren Smith and Ates Diouf..
It was a frantic half for both sides, with multiple opportunities, but sloppy play in the attacking third would see those opportunities to a close. Two corners in succession by Detroit early on would see Kobe Hernandez-Foster send in a direct shot twice. The first would force the Loudoun keeper to punch it over the bar, the second would go out of play.
The first yellow card of the match was shown to Ryan Williams in the 33rd minute for a late tackle.
Coming out of the halftime break, Danny Dichio would make a tactical adjustment in an attempt to help the attack, bringing on Jay Chapman for Kobe Hernandez-Foster.
As the second half progressed, the match would become more and more chippy, with the referee going into his pocket more often. Haruki Yamazaki would be shown a yellow card in the 55th minute for a tactical foul, and it would be only two minutes later that Devon Amoo-Mensah would go into the book for dissent. Loudoun would pick up their first card in the 63rd minute as Garrison Tubbs picked up the card for a late foul in the midfield.
Detroit’s second sub of the game came in the 67th minute as Isaiah LeFlore entered the match for Alex Villanueva.
Loudoun would be the side that would control the second half, and Detroit was always just one step behind on the attack. In an attempt to get the attack even more help, Detroit made another change in the 74th minute, Jordan Adebayo-Smith entered the match for Ates Diouf.
Detroit’s final two subs came in the 88th minute as Sebastian Guenzatti entered for Jeciel Cedeño, and Matt Sheldon came on for Haruki Yamazaki.
A turnover in the first minute of second-half stoppage time would see Omari Glasgow go on the attack and cross the ball to Riley Bidois in front of the net, and he would put it in the back of the net, giving Loudoun the 1-0 lead.
Detroit wouldn’t be able to get any attack going, and Loudoun would steal the three points and clinch their first-ever playoff berth. For Detroit City, they still sit in the seventh position in the Eastern Conference.
