DETROIT — A chippy match at Keyworth Stadium sees Detroit City Football Club and San Antonio FC share the points after a 1-1 draw. A San Antonio converted penalty in the 21st minute saw them take the lead, but it would be a Kobe Hernandez-Foster strike in the 66th minute that would level the match. It became a yellow card overload in the second half stoppage time, as there were eight cards total.
Danny Dichio made a few changes to the starting XI that took the field last week against Tampa Bay Rowdies. Carlos Saldaña was once again the starter in goal. Haruki Yamazaki, Michael Bryant, Devon Amoo-Mensah, and Matt Sheldon were the chosen players to make up the back line this evening. Kobe Hernandez-Foster, Ryan Williams, Alex Villanueva, and Jeciel Cedeño made up the midfield. Darren Smith and Ates Diouf were the two strikers for the evening.
The match started as a back-and-forth battle. Detroit City had the slight advantage in possession throughout the first 15 minutes, but neither side had any shots on target.
A handball in the box by Ates Diouf would send San Antonio to the penalty spot in the 21st minute, and it would be Jorge Hernández converting the penalty for the Texas-based side, giving them the 1-0 lead early.
Detroit would come close in the 39th minute, as a free kick from the edge of the box by Hernandez-Foster finds Darren Smith, whose shot from the net post missed the top corner.
As the action got back underway in the second half, Detroit City made one substitution as Stephen Carroll returned to action, entering the match for Matt Sheldon.
After a threatening beginning to the second half, Detroit City would finally break through in the 66th minute. A free kick awarded just inches outside the box set the stage for Kobe Hernandez-Foster, as he would take the kick, and he sent a rocket of a ball into the top corner of the net, leveling the game at 1-1.
Detroit City would make another change in the 73rd minute, as Isaiah LeFlore made his Detroit City debut after being brought in on loan on Friday, entering the match for Alex Villanueva.
One final change on the night came in the 86th minute, as Jay Chapman entered the match for Jeciel Cedeño.
The referee initially showed six minutes of second-half stoppage time, but we would play more than that, as this game descended into chaos. In the third minute of stoppage time, a late tackle by LeFlore saw the first dustup of stoppage time, resulting in LeFlore, Bilal Obeid, Jeciel Cedeño, and Mohamed Omar being shown yellow cards.
Just moments later, a foul on Ryan Williams sparked another dustup, resulting in Nicky Hernandez and Jay Chapman being shown yellow cards.
Three more yellow cards were shown before this match was brought to its conclusion, as Almir Soto, Jorge Hernández, and Santiago Patiño all received cards for various fouls.
Detroit City solidified their standing in the Eastern Conference with the draw, staying in the fifth position in the table.
Le Rouge wraps up the home stand at Keyworth next Saturday, September 6th, with another inter-conference match against Orange County FC. Tickets for all Detroit City games are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
