DETROIT — Detroit City Football Club closes out a three-game homestand this Saturday night in the final group stage game of the USL Jägermeister Cup against USL League One side Westchester SC. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium is set for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
Le Rouge enters this cup match off a defensive 0-0 draw against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC last Friday night. Goal-scoring opportunities were few and far between for both sides as they only registered two shots on goal each. Goalkeeper Carlos Saldaña picked up his second clean sheet of the season, the first since the opening match at The Miami FC.
Last time out in the Jägermeister Cup, Detroit City stole a point on the road to stay alive in the competition with a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over Hartford Athletic. Matt Sheldon’s brace sent this game into penalties, and a crucial save by Carlos Herrera in the fifth round would set up Michael Bryant to seal the win with a successful penalty.
Heading into the final group stage matches, Detroit City sits in third place in the group with five points. Ahead of them in second is Hartford Athletic with 7 points, and at the top of the table is Rhode Island FC with 9 points. Detroit City can’t win the group, but it can still potentially advance with a win in regulation, a Hartford loss in regulation, and help from around the league for Le Rouge to fall into one of the two wild-card spots.
Westchester SC enters this final round of cup games as the only team in Group 4 that has yet to pick up any points. Last time out in league play, Westchester shared the points with One Knoxville SC in a 1-1 draw. Westchester would fall behind early in the third minute, but a Juan Obregon goal in the 17th minute would level the game, and that would be enough to share the points on the evening.
Even though Westchester is still in its first season, they have already matched up with Detroit City once this year. Back in April, these two sides faced off in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, where Detroit City walked away with a 3-1 victory. A quiet first half gave way to a four-goal second half, during which Morey Doner, Jeciel Cedeño, and Darren Smith all scored, securing the victory for Le Rouge.
Detroit City returns to action on Wednesday, August 6th, for a road battle against Rhode Island FC. Le Rouge will return to Keyworth Stadium on August 9th, facing off against Eastern Conference rival Indy Eleven. Tickets for all Detroit City matches are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
