DETROIT, Michigan – The Detroit City FC men’s team will make a statement in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake and continued devaluation of Black lives on Saturday, August 29, at 7 pm in lieu of playing against the New York Cosmos.
Saturday’s statement is one step the players are putting into action to address the injustice and racism in our community.
“Tomorrow’s statement is an opportunity for us to express our emotions as a team in response to the recent shooting of Jacob Blake and continued demonstrations of injustice toward the African American community,” said Michael Kafari of the Le Rouge men’s side. “This is a chance for us to take a step forward, and actually make a difference and a change in the city of Detroit. We know it starts within and educating ourselves first on the needs of the community and actually take action.”
On Thursday, the players came together for a team only meeting and made the decision to not play Saturday’s match against the New York Cosmos.
The Club fully and wholeheartedly supports this decision and stands in solidarity with its players.
With no match on Saturday, there will no longer be a #WatchCity Watch Party at the City Fieldhouse. Those that purchased tickets will be fully refunded.
The players’ statement will be released through the Club’s social media platforms on Saturday at 7 pm.
