Detroit City FC entered last weekend with one goal: Clinch an NPSL playoff berth. After defeating Lansing United on Sunday, 2-1, they accomplished just that.
Not only did City (9-2-1, W-T-L) achieve its goal of making the playoffs for the first time since 2015, but the win over Lansing (6-0-6) also marked its ninth win in a row and moved DCFC back into first place in the Great Lakes Division with 29 points.
Ann Arbor sits in second with 28 points and a game in hand on Detroit. .
City kicked off its weekend Friday night against AFC Ann Arbor (9-1-1), but in the fifth minute rain began to fall, flooding the field and postponing the match. DCFC announced its make-up match for Tuesday, July 11 at 7:30 PM at Keyworth Stadium.
Then on Sunday afternoon, DCFC defeated Lansing on the road, 2-1. The hard-fought comeback victory saw Lansing scoring first in the 43rd minute.
That lead was short-lived, however, when Shawn Lawson scored in stoppage time before halftime off an assist from Bakie Goodman to level the score, 1-1.
City proceeded to take the lead in the 57th minute thanks to Cyrus Saydee, who scored the game-winner off an assist from Tyrone Mondi.
Detroit was able to hang on and win for the first time ever in Lansing.
With a playoff berth secured, Le Rouge’s mindset shifts to defending its first-place spot when Ann Arbor comes to town Tuesday night.
