Detroit City FC (9-2-1, W-T-L) officially clinched a 2017 NPSL playoff berth with its 2-1 comeback road victory over Lansing United on Sunday afternoon.
The victory, City’s ninth consecutive, was led by goals from Shawn Lawson (45′) and Cyrus Saydee (57′).
With the win, City moves into first place in the NPSL Great Lakes Division with 29 points.
The win was also City’s first-ever on the road in Lansing.
Saydee, who played 85 minutes and scored the winning goal, was named the Man of the Match.
The hard-fought win wasn’t earned easily, though, as it was a back and forth match throughout most of the 90 minutes.
Lansing opened the scoring in the 43rd minute thanks to its captain, James DeCosemo. Le Rouge defenders lost track of the United captain in the box, and he finished at the far post to put the home team up 1-0.
City responded two minutes later, with Bakie Goodman hitting a tricky back-post chip to Shawn Lawson, who slid and put the ball away and equalized before the half.
City would take the 1-1 scoreline into the break, and Cyrus Saydee put the match away in the 57th minute. Tyrone Mondi threaded it through to the City veteran, who danced past Lansing’s goalkeeper, Jimmy Hague.
Le Rouge will look to hold on to first place when it faces #2 AFC Ann Arbor at home on Tuesday night. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM. Tickets are still available at http://tickets.https://www.detcityfc.com.
