Together with its supporters, Detroit City FC has raised a total of $1,200 in support of Freedom House Detroit and refugees’ basic human rights and dignity.
From January 31 through February 8, DCFC announced it would give 10 percent of season ticket sales to the Detroit nonprofit that serves as a temporary haven for survivors of persecution, conflict and turmoil in their home countries.
Just over $10,000 was spent on season tickets throughout the week-long initiative. DCFC also gave 10 percent of the final number.
Freedom House Detroit recently announced it has been denied funding by Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
On June 25, 2016, Le Rouge supporters raised $2,000 to benefit Freedom House through a silent auction of commemorative Freedom House jerseys that City players wore in a 5-0 win over Dayton Dynamo at Keyworth Stadium.
The organization offers food and shelter, legal services, medical and mental health care, English as a Second Language, job training, and transitional housing to those seeking asylum in the United States and Canada. Its mission “is to uphold a fundamental American principle, one inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty, of providing safety for those ‘yearning to breathe free.’”
Freedom House is the only organization in the United States that provides no-fee comprehensive services to refugees. The majority of residents come from sub-Saharan Africa – especially Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda – Latin America and the Middle East.
