Yazeed Matthews is back for his fifth season in the Rouge and Gold. After officially joining the squad later on in the season last year, Matthews quickly got up to speed and helped contribute greatly to the attack. In just seven starts Matthews found the back of the net three times and became a useful option winning headers in deeper attacking situations. Matthews also scored Detroit City FC’s only goal in their USL Championship playoff match on the road to Memphis 901 FC.
Matthews first appeared for Detroit City FC in 2019 following a stint with AFC Ann Arbor. He went on to win the Members Cup Team MVP and League Golden Ball. Matthews returned for the 2020 season and was a consistent starter all throughout the 2020 NISA Fall Championship Tournament, starting in the final against the Oakland Roots. Yazeed was back once again for 2021 and he was a crucial asset to the 2021 squad, scoring four goals and registering one assist in 379 minutes of play.
