Defender Alex Villanueva is preparing for his second season with Detroit City FC. Villanueva became a mainstay on the backline after making 38 appearances for DCFC last season. Over almost 2,500 minutes last season, Villanueva assisted on four goals, with three of those coming in the final four matches of the season.
At 22 years old, Villanueva is still one of the youngest players on the Detroit City roster, but he has over 125 matches in the USL Championship. Prior to joining Le Rouge last season, Villanueva played two seasons for Western Conference side Orange County SC. Over his two seasons with the California club, the defender would make 56 appearances. 2022 would see Villanueva start in all 34 games for Orange County, accumulating two assists on the season.
Before joining Orange County ahead of the 2022 season, Villanueva spent four seasons within the Seattle Sounders organization, most of the time spent with Tacoma Defiance of the USL Championship. In 2021, Villanueva made his debut for the MLS side, making two appearances in the summer for the Sounders. Villanueva scored his first professional goal with Tacoma in a substitution appearance against San Diego Loyal.
