DETROIT, Michigan – Today, Detroit City Football Club, Detroit’s professional soccer team, has opened to the public for the first time ever the opportunity to buy an equity stake in the club. The club has made a name for itself in American and international soccer circles due to the rabid support of its fans. Now those fans will have an opportunity to call themselves owners of the club.
2020 was going to be DCFC’s first full season as a professional club as well as mark the launch of the club’s women’s team. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the men’s season was suspended and is set to resume on Friday while the first women’s season was reduced to a single tournament this past weekend.
With the COVID-19 pandemic making it impossible for fans to attend DCFC matches in 2020, the club is taking the unprecedented action of giving current season ticket holders the option of converting their tickets into equity in the club.
“Detroit City FC, has grown over the past decade from a grassroots effort to bring together neighbors through the beautiful game to Detroit’s first professional soccer team in generations,” stated Sean Mann, DCFC Co-Owner and CEO. “None of the club’s success would have been possible without the support of the community that surrounds the club and that has constantly lifted it to new heights. As the club navigates through the current pandemic and economic crisis, and positions itself for success and continued growth for years to come, it only made sense for us to turn to our fans to shape our future. Our fans who have given so much to the club have a justified sense of ownership in its success, and now they have the opportunity to have a legal ownership stake in the organization.”
By buying into the campaign, fans will have an equity stake in the club as well as the bragging rights of being able to say they own a professional soccer team. Community investors will also be given the opportunity to shape the culture of the club by proposing and voting on issues such as annual charity partners, honouring players, and certain club and stadium policies, as well as regular calls and meetings with the team’s front office.
Detroit City FC will be rolling out a marketing campaign, developed by Detroit-based agency Lafayette/American, over the coming weeks featuring billboards and social media posts highlighting this unique opportunity to become a professional sports team owner.
Cultural icon, and Michigan-native, Iggy Pop is providing his voice for an ad for the campaign, and has signed on to be an investor in the campaign, as well as symbolically represent all community investors that become part of the organization’s ownership group.
Starting with Friday night’s DCFC vs. Cleveland SC match, the broadcasts of the club’s remaining matches will feature a retro-style telethon supporting the campaign produced in partnership with the Planet Ant theatre company, as well as Former Co. and Aninterval. Detroit City FC matches can be streamed around the globe at https://www.detcityfc.com/watchcity.
The raise is through a federal Regulation CF offering, with units in the company open to investors across the globe, starting at $125. The club is looking to raise a maximum of $1.2 million through the sale of 10% of the equity of the club. Funds from the raise will primarily be used for improvements to Keyworth Stadium, increased front office staff, and reserve funds for continued COVID related costs. Details of the campaign and investment opportunity can be found at www.wefunder.com/dcfc.
