DETROIT, MI – Detroit City Football Club announced Saturday the club has signed forward Yazeed Matthews to a deal that will see him in Rouge and Gold for the remainder of the 2022 season with a club option that could extend his stay throughout the 2023 campaign, pending league and federation approval.
Matthews, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, began playing college soccer at Tyler Junior College but after two successful campaigns there, transferred to Coastal Carolina University ahead of the 2017 season. In his senior year for Coastal Carolina, Yazeed went on to score 13 goals and register three assists in just 1099 minutes of play.
Matthews is returning for his fourth season with Detroit City FC. Matthews was originally signed ahead of the 2019 Members Cup following a successful spell with NPSL foes AFC Ann Arbor and was a crucial part of the 2019 Members Cup winning squad, winning the Golden Ball and team Members Cup MVP for his efforts.
Yazeed Matthews then was announced to be returning for the 2020 season and would play three matches in the 2020 Fall Championship bubble tournament, scoring one goal and registering one assist in 265 minutes of play. Matthews was part of the starting lineup for the NISA 2020 Fall Tournament final, the match in which Detroit City FC won their first ever title as a professional side.
In 2021 Yazeed would play a big part for Detroit City FC as a trustworthy option off of the bench and he proved this to be the case scoring four goals and creating one assist in just 379 minutes of play. A highlight of Yazeed’s 2021 season with Detroit City FC was a last-minute scissor kick winner on the road against Chattanooga FC to claim what was a massive three points at the time.
Yazeed Matthews is the third longest-tenured player for Le Rouge on this current USL Championship roster, only behind Nate Steinwascher and Stephen Carroll.
Detroit City FC next takes the field on Saturday, August 13 at Keyworth Stadium when the Oakland Roots come into town. For ticket information, visit tickets.detcityfc.com
