DETROIT, Michigan – Detroit City FC announced the signing of defender Brandon Clegg to its men’s team heading into the 2020 NISA Fall Championship Tournament. Clegg comes to Detroit from his collegiate career at James Madison University. 

This past fall, Clegg earned second-team Colonial Athletic Association honors – logging 1,656 minutes in 15 appearances. The Manassas, Virginia, native started at least 14 matches in each of his four seasons at JMU. Clegg finished his collegiate career with nine points (three goals, three assists). 

Clegg made six appearances for Evergreen FC formerly of the PDL – now USL League Two in 2016. He was a member of the ODP Region Team during his prep career and scored 30 goals with 30 assists in three high school seasons. 

Clegg made his professional debut with Detroit City on Monday night’s match against the Stars. He played a full 90 minutes on City’s backline. 

Le Rouge returns to the pitch on Thursday, September 24, against the Oakland Roots at 5 pm. The Roots come off a 3-0 victory against New Amsterdam FC on Monday.

New York controlled most of the possession throughout the match, but a strong defensive effort from Tendai Jirira – the Man of the Match – and the rest of the City back four held the Cosmos scoreless. 

DCFC has held three consecutive clean sheets and six out of seven matches in 2020. Wednesday night saw two keepers split time in frame for Le Rouge as Jean Antoine started the match and Parker Siegfried – signed this week – made his debut for City in the second half.

DCFC opened the spring slate with a 2-0 win at the LA Force before the season was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. City battled a man down for more than 30 minutes in Pontiac, playing to a scoreless draw at the Stars. 

New York has played just two league matches this fall, drawing 1-1 against the Stars before defeating NAFC, 3-1. Bledi Bardic leads NYC with two tallies in NISA play. Ansi Agolli paces the league with two assists this fall. The Cosmos finished with two points in the Mid-Atlantic region of the Independent Cup, playing New Amsterdam and the Maryland Bobcats to a 1-1 draw, respectively. 

The match between Le Rouge and the Cosmos was originally scheduled for August 29. Following the shooting of Jacob Blake, the players of City decided as a team to boycott the match in protest of social injustice. Shortly after the announcement, New Amsterdam FC canceled its match at Chattanooga.

Siegfried comes to the motor city from South Georgia Tormenta FC where he signed with the USL One side in April. 

The former Ohio State Buckeye was selected 74th overall by NYCFC in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. Siegfried ranks fourth all-time in Buckeye history with 18 career shutouts – including a school-record six-consecutive. 

Prior to his collegiate career, Siegfried played with the Columbus Crew Academy and with the U14, U15 and U18 U.S. National teams.

HAMTRAMCK, Michigan – The Detroit City FC men’s side secured its first victory of the 2020 NISA fall season with a 3-0 result over New Amsterdam FC on Saturday night at historic Keyworth Stadium. 

DCFC got off to a fiery start with some early chances. City forward and man of the match Connor Rutz capitalized on the quick opportunities as he found the back of the net in the seventh minute for his third goal since joining the club this season. 

Not to be outdone, Shawn-Claud Lawson doubled the DCFC lead just four minutes later with his third goal in all comps to add some early breathing room. Lawson has netted 39 career goals for Le Rouge. 

New Amsterdam generated very little pressure throughout the match, but their task was made substantially harder when NAFC’s Mahmoud Keita was shown a second yellow in the 41st minute. Detroit City took its 2-0 edge to the locker room. 

Le Rouge continued to push the 10-man New Amsterdam side in the second half when Rutz powered a right-footed shot into the lower corner of the net in the 61st minute for his second goal of the match, giving City a 3-0 lead. 

Two more red cards would be awarded in the second half – one to City’s Elijah Rice. 

Up next for Le Rouge is a rescheduled match with the New York Cosmos this Wednesday in Uniondale NY. First kick is slated for 7pm.
