DETROIT, Mich. – Detroit City FC (DCFC) travels to St. Petersburg this weekend to take on the league-leading Tampa Bay Rowdies. The game, at Al Lang Stadium at 7:30pm this Saturday, features the top two teams in the Eastern Conference.
Le Rouge comes off an emotional win last weekend, clinching a home playoff match after defeating Rhode Island FC at Keyworth Stadium. Tampa Bay defeated Indy Eleven 3-1 in their most recent match. Sitting in the top two spots in the Eastern Conference standings with two matches remaining, both teams look to solidify their positions for home-field advantage in the playoffs. Tampa Bay currently leads the entire USL Championship with 55 points, while Detroit City FC has 50 on the year, tied for second. The top team overall will receive home-field advantage throughout the entire USL Championship playoffs.
The last meeting between the two clubs saw Le Rouge defeat Tampa Bay at Keyworth Stadium in August, with Ates Diouf scoring the game’s lone goal in the 36th minute. Saturday is shaping up to be another close game, as Detroit City FC has conceded the fewest goals in the league, at 20, while Tampa Bay ranks third with 26 goals allowed on the year. Le Rouge’s Carlos Herrera leads the league in clean sheets with 13, while Tampa Bay Rowdies’ Jahmali White is right behind Herrera with 12.
Availability
Preston Tabort-Etaka and Connor Rutz are listed as out for Detroit City FC. Kian Williams is questionable. Carlos Herrera is suspended for the match.
Storylines
Home Field Advantage: Both Detroit City FC and Tampa Bay Rowdies have secured at least one home playoff match for this postseason. Both teams look to solidify their position in the standings on Saturday.
A Change in Net: Le Rouge will be without their standout goalkeeper Carlos Herrera for the match, as Herrera received a red card in Saturday’s match against Rhode Island FC. Herrera leads the USL Championship with 13 clean sheets this season. Carlos Saldana stepped in for Herrera and kept Rhode Island FC scoreless.
Players’ Shield in Sight: With a win, Tampa Bay would clinch the USL’s best record, winning the 2026 Players’ Shield. With a Detroit City FC win, Le Rouge would move to 53 points, two behind Tampa Bay, with a chance at taking the trophy home for themselves.
The Golden Boot: Detroit City FC’s Darren Smith scored the game-winner last Saturday, his 14th of the year. Smith is now tied for second in the league in goals scored, only behind El Paso Locomotive FC’s Rubio Rubin in the Golden Boot race.
