Detroit City FC fell 3-2 to Midwest United FC at Keyworth Stadium on Wednesday night, a result that closed the door on Le Rouge’s bid for a return to the USL W League postseason. Midwest United struck first late in the opening half and then answered Detroit City’s second-half surge with two goals of their own in the final 20 minutes. In a back-and-forth night in front of the Keyworth faithful, Le Rouge outshot the visitors in the first half but could not find a late equalizer in stoppage time.
After a cagey opening spell, Midwest United began to grow into the match, forcing Detroit goalkeeper Allison Lapoint into four first-half saves as the visitors matched Le Rouge with six shots apiece before the break. The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when Jocelyn Herrema delivered the goal, sending Midwest into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Detroit City came out of the locker room on the front foot, turning pressure into a deserved leveler just before the hour mark. In the 57th minute, Abigail Smothers broke through for Le Rouge, then doubled her tally eight minutes laterin the 65th to flip the match on its head and put Detroit City in front 2-1.
Midwest United refused to go away, finding an answer less than ten minutes after falling behind. In the 71st minute, Gracie Lynn pulled the visitors level at 2-2, and then in stoppage time, Meredith Vance delivered a gut-punching winner to seal all three points and put an end to Detroit City FC’s postseason hopes.
