Detroit City FC fell 2-1 to AFC Ann Arbor on Wednesday night at Keyworth Stadium, conceding twice in the second half before a late response from Erin Rasmussen.
DCFC and Ann Arbor played out a scoreless first half before the visitors struck twice after the break to grab control of the match. Ann Arbor found the opener in the 67th minute and doubled their advantage in the 83rd, with Rasmussen’s 84th-minute finish providing late drama but not enough to complete the comeback.
Key moments
Ann Arbor’s breakthrough came just past the hour mark when Madison Mauch converted to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Makenzie Simpson then added a second in the 83rd minute, putting DCFC in a two-goal hole before Rasmussen cut the deficit moments later.
Rasmussen’s goal in the 84th minute rewarded a more assertive spell from Le Rouge as they pushed numbers forward in search of a response. DCFC continued to press across the final minutes of regulation but could not find an equalizer before the final whistle.
Goalkeeper Allison LaPoint logged a full 90 minutes and recorded six saves on eight shots faced, helping keep DCFC in the match despite Ann Arbor’s second-half surge. Rasmussen led the line for all 90 minutes, registering two shots and the late goal that brought Le Rouge back within one.
Substitutions and tactical shifts
Head Coach Dani Evans‘ first change of the night came at halftime, with Mackenzie Reuber entering for right back Cali Schwartzenberger to refresh the back line. Shortly after, DCFC introduced Maggie Baginski and Kaiya Stewart in the 53rd minute, replacing Dani Stephan and Kayla Addison to inject energy into the attack.
In the 66th minute, Hannah Crum checked in for Yuika Nakayama on the right side, giving Le Rouge another wide option as they chased the match. Ann Arbor made key changes of their own, including Bella Hynes and Simpson off the bench, with Simpson ultimately delivering what proved to be the match-winning goal.
By the numbers
DCFC generated 11 shots to Ann Arbor’s nine, edging the visitors in total attempts while also winning the corner battle 4-2. Both sides shared a competitive foul count, underscoring the tight margins on a physical night at Keyworth.
