DETROIT— Detroit City Football Club began the home portion of the 2025 USL W League season with a 0-0 draw against Union Macomb FC. A defensive showcase throughout included moments of excellence on both sides attempting to break the deadlock, but even better defense maintained the clean sheet.
Head coach David Dwaihy fielded an almost entirely new starting XI for this matchup compared to the one that took the field against AFC Ann Arbor last week. Allison Lapoint got the start in goal once again. The back line comprised Ella Offer, Maia Soulis, Acadia Murphy, and Mira Webster. The midfield included Ella Karolak, Kate Childers, Abby Werthman, and Tatiana Mason. The front two for this match were Kayla Addison and Hannah Crum.
Kayla Addison had the first chance of the game in the eleventh minute, as she forced a turnover and took a quick shot from just outside the box. The shot misses the top corner of the net by inches.
Tatiana Mason came close to an opener in the 18th minute, but her shot from inside the box bounced off the far post and into the Macomb keeper’s hands.
Union Macomb shifted the tempo of the game in their favor after the 20th minute, beginning to control most of the possession. A close-range shot by Union Macomb in the 25th minute prompts a great save by Allison Lapoint.
After a Detroit City foul just outside of the box in the 38th minute, it awarded Union Macomb their best opportunity of the match so far. The shot was taken, stopped, and cleared by the Detroit City wall, halting any further attacking threat.
In the second half, Union Macomb controlled possession for most of the 45 minutes, compelling DCFC to make tactical adjustments. Ella Kane came on for Kayla Addison at halftime. Emily Pagett substituted in for Tatiana Mason in the 61st minute. Finally, Detroit made their last substitutions of the night in the 69th minute, with Drew Martin and Sophia Enwright replacing Hannah Crum and Mira Webster.
Detroit finally broke the Macomb attack in the 81st minute, as they regained control of the game for the final ten minutes. Ella Kane came close to finding an opener in the 81st minute, but her shot forced the Macomb keeper into a diving save.
Le Rouge had a few more opportunities in the final moments of the match, but none were good enough to break through the Macomb back line, leading this match to end in a 0-0 draw.
For Detroit City, it’s back at Keyworth on Wednesday for a midweek match against Toledo Villa FC. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets for all Detroit City matches are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
