DETROIT— A day that started well for Detroit City Football Club ends poorly as Charleston Battery walks away with a 3-1 victory. Jay Chapman opened the scoring in the second minute for Detroit City, but Charleston scored three unanswered goals to walk away with the three points on the afternoon.
A rapid start for Detroit City saw Ben Morris put a perfect corner kick into the box in the second minute. Jay Chapman was on the receiving end, and he headed it away to give Detroit a very early lead.
For Chapman, it’s his first goal in the Rouge and Gold and his first goal since scoring for Hartford Athletic early in the 2024 season.
The lead would not last long for Detroit, as in the fifth minute, USL Championship top scorer Cal Jennings would add to his total, leveling this match at 1-1.
In the 15th minute, Dominic Gasso came close to scoring a second goal from a corner kick taken by Ben Morris. Left unmarked at the far post, Gasso headed the ball just wide of the post.
Dominic Gasso would pick up the match’s first yellow card in the 32nd minute.
Cal Jennings would make another impact on this match right before the half, as he would find the back of the net to give Charleston a 2-1 advantage.
Coming out of the halftime break, Charleston kept the pressing attack up. It would result in Juan Torres adding a third for Charleston.
Ben Morris came close to bringing this game to within one in the 61st minute, as he tried to catch the keeper out of position with a chip, and the ball took a bad bounce off the turf and went wide of the far post.
Detroit would make its first changes of the evening in the 63rd minute as Stephen Carroll, Connor Rutz, and Haruki Yamazaki entered the match for Michael Bryant, Jeciel Cedeño, and Alex Villanueva.
Darren Smith got close in the 68th minute, as the Charleston goalkeeper deflected the ball out of the box. Smith intercepted the ball and took a shot from just outside the box, but his shot just missed the right post.
Another change for DCFC came in the 74th minute as Ates Diouf entered the match for Rhys Williams.
Diouf came close to making an instant impact on the match in the 76th minute as he danced up the goal line and took a shot that beat the keeper but bounced off the post.
The final change of the afternoon for Detroit saw Marcello Polisi enter the match for Shane Wiedt in the 84th minute.
The difficult afternoon would come to a close after four minutes of stoppage time. Detroit couldn’t find an answer to beat the Charleston keeper after the second minute, which led to multiple good opportunities being saved.
For Detroit, it’s the first loss at Keyworth this season, having previously held a 3-2-0 record.
Le Rouge heads back out on the road for the next three weekends, starting with a USL Jägermeister Cup match at USL 1 side Portland Hearts of Pine. Detroit returns to Keyworth Stadium Saturday, June 21st, to take on The Miami FC. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium is set for 4 p.m. Tickets for all Detroit City matches are available at www.detcityfc.com/tickets.
