DETROIT – Detroit City returned to Keyworth this Saturday in a top-of-the-table clash in the USLW Great Lakes division as they played host to second-place Midwest United battling to a hard-fought 2-1 victory that went down to the final seconds.
The match started off tense, with both teams looking to size each other up with spans of possession. In the sixth minute, Midwest earned the first corner of the match, which Gabrielle Schriver comfortably claimed.
In the ninth minute, DCFC got their first sight of goal. Kayla Addison danced down the right flank before squaring a ball to the feet of Joyelle Washington, whose effort lacked the venom necessary to open the scoring.
Le Rouge began to find their feet in the game following the chance, creating a number of other half chances.
In the 21st minute, both sides got a sight of goal. Midwest’s dangerous play down the left flank ended in dangerous service into the DCFC that would eventually be claimed by Schriver. Le Rouge quickly responded with a chance to Addison moments later.
Just four minutes later, Washington would open the scoring with a poachers goal. Washington was the first to react to a deflected free kick from Hannah Crum, getting a touch on the rebound amidst the chaos to direct it over Midwest’s goal line.
Following the goal, Le Rouge began to assert themselves as the controlling side with play being spent more and more in the Midwest defensive half.
In the 34th minute, Crum would find herself on the end of a cleared DCFC corner, smashing the effort on the half-volley as it glanced just over the Midwest crossbar.
The final key chance of the half fell to Nina Ferraro of DCFC who should some clever feet to get to the top of the 18-yard box looking for an incisive pass to Addison to get her in on goal but the pass would just miss the feet of Addison.
Detroit City put Midwest under pressure right away at the turn of the half with another big chance falling to Washington who was unable to direct her effort on target just two minutes into the half.
The continued pressure paid off when in the 51st minute a jumble in the box saw the ball fall to Addison who showed great composure to tidily tuck the ball away from 6 yards out doubling the lead for Le Rouge.
Midwest looked to answer back in the 60th minute with a chance down the right wing that saw a cross fired into the box, which was claimed by a diving Gabrielle Schriver to deny any shot on net.
Three minutes later, Midwest got another sight of goal but the effort would be sent off target after a crucial intervention from Offer at the back.
As the second half dwindled down Midwest only got more and more desperate as they looked for a way back into the game. In the 71st an attempt from 20 yards out called on Schriver to react but still flashed just wide of the goal post.
The returned pressure and desperation would pay off in the 78th minute, when Midwest were awarded a penalty which would be cooly slotted away by Regan Berg to bring Midwest within one goal.
The final ten minutes saw a determined defensive performance from Detroit that saw them weather the storm and dig deep to see out the victory as Le Rouge asserted themselves at the top of the Great Lakes Division.
Le Rouge returns to action on Wednesday, June 19th, when they travel to South Bend, Indiana, to face the Michiana Lions.
