DETROIT – Detroit City FC begins their campaign in the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Tuesday with a third-round matchup against NISA’s Michigan Stars FC. Kickoff is set for 7 PM EDT.
Detroit enters the Open Cup match after a bye week in the USL Championship. The last time out, they defeated North Carolina FC 1-0 on home turf at Keyworth Stadium. A Nelson Blanco own goal in the 10th minute would be the only goal on the day, but it would be enough for Le Rouge to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
Head coach Danny Dichio was awarded the USL Championship Coach of the Month award for March. In his first month as coach of Le Rouge, he led the team to a perfect 3-0-0 record, winning each game 2-1 against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, Loudoun United, and Indy Eleven. This marks the second time a Detroit head coach has won the award, with Trevor James winning in April 2022.
Michigan Stars FC comes into Tuesday’s match after a season-opening 3-2 victory over Savannah Clovers FC in NISA League play. Stars entered the US Open Cup in the first round, defeating Steel City 1-0 in the first round and Minnesota United 2 by a score of 2-0 in the second round.
These two have a storied history, going back to Detroit City’s days in the National Premier Soccer League when the opposition was known as FC Sparta Michigan. Most recently, they faced off in the second round of the 2022 US Open Cup, where Le Rouge walked away with a 3-0 victory. Connor Rutz opened the scoring in the 45th minute, which was quickly followed by a Matt Lewis goal just two minutes later. Lewis would get his second goal in the 63rd minute, securing the victory for Le Rouge and seeing them onto the next round.
Detroit City’s longest run in the US Open Cup came in the 2022 season. After defeating Michigan Stars, they upset MLS side Columbus Crew 2-1 at Keyworth Stadium. Their run would end in the next round, the round of 32, as they fell to Louisville City FC 4-2 on penalties.
Last season, Detroit City started their US Open Cup run in the second round with a 1-0 victory over Gold Star FC Detroit before falling to MLS side Minnesota United FC 3-1 at Keyworth in the third round.
The city of Detroit has a notable history with the US Open Cup. Throughout its 109-year history, two teams from Detroit have reached the US Open Cup Final. Holley Carburetor FC hosted the 1927 final at the University of Detroit Stadium but fell to Fall River FC from Massachusetts with a 7-0 scoreline. Similarly, Detroit Chrysler FC made it to the Open Cup Final in 1941 but was defeated by Pawtucket FC from Rhode Island with an 8-5 aggregate score.
