Detroit, Michigan – Today, The U.S. Soccer Open Cup Committee released the field of teams for the 109th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Detroit City FC will enter the tournament’s Third Round on April 16 or April 17.
Detroit City FC has made six appearances in the Open Cup – with all but two coming as an amateur side – and most recently appeared in 2023. DCFC entered the 2020 and 2021 tournaments that did not occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In last year’s US Open Cup, Detroit City FC began play by defeating Gold Star FC of the National Independent Soccer Association 1-0 at Keyworth Stadium in the Second Round. Then, Le Rouge hosted Minnesota United FC of Major League Soccer. Despite going ahead early in the match through Yazeed Matthews, Detroit City FC became undone and fell 3-1 in a gutsy loss to the top division side.
Supporters fondly remember Detroit City FC’s 2022 run in the Open Cup. It all began with the team defeating the Michigan Stars by a score of 3-0 at Keyworth Stadium in the second round. Following this, Le Rouge was drawn against the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer at Keyworth Stadium. Detroit City FC was down early in the match but controlled most of the play. This would be rewarded in the second half thanks to a Maxi Rodriguez brace, which saw them into the Round of 32, a banner night for the club. Le Rouge would lose in the Round of 32 to USL Championship Eastern Conference foes Louisville City FC after losing in penalties as the score was tied 1-1 after 120 minutes of play.
About the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Now in its 109th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned a champion since 1914 in every year except 2020 and 2021. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The 2024 U.S. Open Cup winner will earn $300,000 in prize money, a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions League, and have its name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy – one of the oldest nationally-contested trophies in American team sports – now on permanent display at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Frisco, Texas. The runner-up will earn $100,000, while the team that advances the furthest from each lower division will take home a $25,000 cash prize.
Houston Dynamo FC are the defending Open Cup champions, having earned the club’s second tournament title thanks to a 2-1 victory over Inter Miami last Sept. 27 in front of a capacity crowd at Fort Lauderdale’s DRV PNK Stadium.
