Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Detroit City FC will be making their second consecutive appearance in the USL Championship Playoffs this Saturday in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. Detroit comes into this game as the eighth seed, Pittsburgh as the one seed, giving them home-field advantage at Highmark Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM Eastern and will be streamed live on ESPN+ and broadcast on TV20 Detroit and FOX47 Lansing.
Detroit clinched their spot in the playoffs last weekend at Keyworth Stadium with a 0-0 draw against Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Crucial saves by Nate Steinwascher ensured Le Rouge came away with a point in this matchup. That point would end up being the difference between making the playoffs and not, as Miami FC ended up losing to Sacramento Republic FC, putting Detroit in the final spot, with Le Rouge having the advantage in the head-to-head tiebreaker.
A defensive masterclass from Devon Amoo-Mensah earned him a spot on the USL Championship Team of the Week for week 32. In addition to the Team of the Week nomination, Amoo-Mensah was chosen as the 2023 Players Player of the Year and this year’s Black Arrow MVP. Amoo-Mensah’s strong leadership along the backline over 26 starts and 2,200 minutes earned him these awards for this season.
The Pittsburgh Riverhounds come into this game on an 8-match unbeaten streak. Riverhounds already have silverware in their cabinet from this season, winning the Players Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular season record.
These two teams have met two times this season, one being last week’s 0-0 draw, and the other was in July at Highmark Stadium. Riverhounds walked away with a 2-0 victory off of an Edward Kizza goal in the 8th minute and a Burke Fahling goal in the 51st minute to give Pittsburgh the three points in a dominating display.
The winner of this match will go on to face off against the winner of the Memphis 901 FC Louisville City FC match in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals.
