Detroit, Michigan – Detroit City FC faced off with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Keyworth Stadium in the final regular season game for both sides. Detroit knew they needed at least a point to keep their playoff hopes alive, and that’s exactly what they got, drawing 0-0 with Pittsburgh.
The draw ended up being enough to qualify for the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs presented by Hisense as The Miami FC fell to the Sacramento Republic by a scoreline of 1-0 on Saturday night.
Le Rouge will now travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Riverhounds in a 7 PM kickoff next Saturday, October 21 to take on the team that they faced, and drew 0-0 with, at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday night.
The game started off slow for both sides, with Le Rouge controlling most of the possession. Although they controlled possession, they just couldn’t get any sustainable attack going within the first 15 minutes.
Pittsburgh got their first real opportunity of the game in the 14th minute, but it was a huge save from Nate Steinwascher to keep the game at 0-0.
Detroit was awarded a total of 9 corner kicks in the game, but none were as good as the opportunity in the 29th minute. A Matt Lewis header in the box ends up at Stephen Carroll’s feet, but a very congested box leads to the ball being shot off-target and out of play
Detroit had two very good shots within the box off of a free kick in the 39th minute, with one being taken by Michael Bryant, but Pittsburgh’s back line deflected the ball out of play.
The teams would go into the half with the score still at 0-0. Detroit had the advantage in possession, controlling play for 60% of the half, but both teams had 2 shots during the half, with none of them being on target.
The second half would start just as most of the first plated out. The first opportunity of the half was for Pittsburgh, as Danny Griffin had a shot from the center of the box that Steinwascher saved from going into the top corner of the goal. The game remained at 0-0.
Michael Bryant had a header in the 66th minute off of a Maxi Rodriguez corner kick, but the ball would go off the far post and end up out of play.
Pittsburgh had the last goal opportunity of the game in the 72nd minute, as Robbie Mertz hit the right post off of a free kick from a dangerous position just outside of Le Rouge’s penalty area.
Both teams played out the last 15 minutes with no major opportunities as the full-time whistle blew for the final time at Keyworth Stadium this season with a final score of 0-0.
Detroit City FC also announced the winner of their 2023 Black Arrow MVP and Player’s Player of the Year, both awards were won by defender Devon Amoo-Mensah.
