Detroit, Michigan – Detroit City FC is pleased to announce that following the 2023 USL Championship season, it will promote Head Coach and General Manager Trevor James to become the club’s first-ever Sporting Director.
In leading the technical side from this position, James will have oversight of all soccer activities for Detroit City FC, including the men’s professional (USL Championship) team, the women’s pre-professional (W League) team, the developmental USL Academy teams (boys and girls), recruitment, scouting, performance analysis, performance preparation (sports science and medical) as well as soccer operations. The terms of the agreement extend through the end of 2026.
This appointment builds upon the work James has already undertaken in his nearly five years at the helm at Detroit City FC, continuing to work closely with ownership and the rest of the staff to deliver sustained success on the pitch and to expand the club’s commitment to community engagement and grassroots soccer culture off of it.
In anticipation of his new responsibilities, James will kick off the transition into his new role by overseeing the search for his replacement as Head Coach on the sidelines at Keyworth Stadium in 2024.
Assistant GM Tiffany Ebert James will also see her responsibilities expand. As VP of Sporting and Wellness, Ebert James will be a strategic advisor to the Sporting Director, overseeing player wellness, negotiations and budgeting, and logistics within all sporting areas.
Sean Mann, DCFC CEO, and Co-Owner: “Since his arrival, Trevor has worked tirelessly to professionalize our club. His efforts have resulted in trophies, and he has assembled squads that embrace our special community and wear the Rouge and Gold with pride. We’re excited to have Trevor at the helm of all of our soccer operations as we continue to invest in the infrastructure and additional staff necessary to win.”
Trevor James, DCFC Head Coach and General Manager on his new role: “It’s an honor to continue with the Club in the role of Sporting Director. We’ve achieved so much in the last five years and I’m looking forward to continuing the commitment to excellence on and off the field and leading the sporting side of the club to new heights.”
Along with the 2024 head coaching search, Trevor James will continue to oversee building the 2024 roster and managing the 2023 team as it heads into the playoff chase this fall. Given the demands of all three efforts, DCFC announces the addition of assistant coach Steve Myles to the men’s first-team staff for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Myles has served as an assistant coach for the NE Revolution, and over his 3-decade career, has held developmental coaching positions for LA Galaxy, David Beckham Academy, Barnsley, and Sheffield United. He is a native of Sheffield, England. Myles joins Ryan Needs (Assistant Coach) and Eric Perilla (GK Coach) on the bench alongside Trevor James.
