Albuquerque, New Mexico – Detroit City FC fails to get going in the attack on the road to New Mexico United of the Western Conference and loses by a score of 1-0 thanks to a goal in the 82nd minute from Alex Waggoner.
Detroit City FC was looking to bounce back from a difficult 3-2 loss on the road to FC Tulsa last weekend and kickstart their push for the playoffs in the second half of the season but struggled to get going offensively on Saturday evening in New Mexico.
The best chance of the first half was when a clever ball was played across the area to forward Skage Simonsen but Simonsen was rushed and scuffed his shot and sent it out of danger, a huge sigh of relief for the hosts.
Clever defending from Captain Stephen Carroll would put him in an excellent position to make a goal-line clearance from a dangerous chance in the first half after goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher was dribbled around inside of Le Rouge’s 18-yard box.
The second half would be more of the same with Le Rouge struggling to get touches for their forwards, creating a lack of chances in the final third of the pitch. Despite this, Detroit City FC weathered the storm of a few dangerous New Mexico United counterattacks.
Detroit City FC would have two chances to go ahead in the second half through a powerful effort from forward Yazeed Matthews. Then, forward Ben Morris dribbled through the New Mexico backline inside of their own area before seeing his low and powerful shot saved by the New Mexico goalkeeper.
New Mexico United would go ahead with a header from Alex Waggoner in the 82nd minute. Through clever play on the wing, a cross from wide would just go over the head of Matt Lewis but fall to Waggoner who made no mistake to put his side ahead late and claim all three points against Detroit City FC.
This is the tenth loss of Detroit City FC’s season, having played 18 matches, this is the eighth 1-0 loss that Le Rouge has suffered this season, the most in the USL Championship. Detroit City FC will next welcome Loudoun United FC at Keyworth Stadium on Wednesday, July 12 with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM.
