Ann Arbor, Michigan – Detroit City FC finishes their Sophomore campaign in the USL W League in fever-pitch form, routing AFC Ann Arbor on the road in a dominant 6-0 victory in a match that was called after 72 minutes due to severe weather in the area.
It was an early goalscoring start for Le Rouge, who found the back of the net after just ten minutes thanks to a towering header from midfielder Avery Peters after a well-placed corner kick from Syd Blomquist found an unmarked Peters inside of the AFC Ann Arbor penalty area.
The assist-maker Blomquist would quickly turn goalscorer just ten minutes later to double Detroit City FC’s advantage. A clever ball from deep found its way to forward Kayla Addison inside of the Le Rouge penalty area, a clever pass to Ellie Pool inside of the area would cause confusion amongst the Ann Arbor backline before the ball fell to Blomquist who tucked a shot past the Ann Arbor keeper to make it 2-0.
Despite riding high, up 2-0 through 20 minutes of play, Le Rouge never took their foot off of the gas, playing with an intensity that naturally generated attacking opportunities as the hosts never got going in the match.
Things would go from bad to worse for AFC Ann Arbor in the 29th minute when the ball bounced off of one of their defenders and to the feet of an unmarked Kayla Addison inside of the penalty area. Addison would make no mistake and turn the ball into the net for the second game running to make the scoreline 3-0.
Le Rouge would add one more goal before going into the locker room as an inch-perfect freekick was taken by Syd Blomquist that would sail over everyone before finding the head of Melanie Moore who placed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
When the sides emerged from the locker room for the second half of action, rain began to pick up but that did not stop Le Rouge from getting back to the form they were in before the break, winning the battle in the midfield and exploiting Ann Arbor in the wide positions.
This would be on display in the 61st minute when Madison Duncan went on a clever run into the Ann Arbor penalty area, breezing past her markers, a well-placed ball by substitute Faith Webber was all it took to play Duncan through on goal and her header was up and over the keeper to extend the lead to 5-0.
The last kick of the game would be yet another goal for Detroit City FC, this time it would be substitute Adelle Francis who breezed past her defender and scored with a brilliant header that caught the Ann Arbor keeper off of her line to make it a shocking 6-0 result for Detroit City FC.
Seconds after the goal the match was delayed due to a lightning strike near the stadium, with the rain worsening, the match was officially canceled a few minutes later and would end by a scoreline of 6-0 after 72 minutes.
With this win Le Rouge claimed third place in the USL W League Great Lakes Conference, concluding their second season in the USL W League with a record of 5-3-4, a point per match tally of 1.50. This 6-0 blitz also takes Le Rouge’s goal differential into the positives, finishing with a +2 on the season. Over the two meetings between AFC Ann Arbor and Detroit City FC this season, Le Rouge came out on top with an aggregate score of 10-1.
