Hamtramck, Michigan – Detroit City FC claims their first league win at home in 2023 after defeating San Antonio FC by a score of 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Skage Simonsen.
DCFC started off very strong as forward Skage Simonsen received goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher’s goal kick near the top of the penalty box and booted in a sharp strike that whipped right over San Antonio keeper Jordan Farr right before the five minute mark. That marks Steinwascher’s first assist in his time with Le Rouge.
San Antonio had multiple chances to tie the match at one but just as many errors led to their score reading zero at the half. SAFC had a corner kick opportunity that saw the back of the net in the 12th minute but the ball was ultimately ruled out of play before hand, disallowing the potential equalizer. They also had a good look at goal in the 26th minute, but the shot from the SA attacker smacked off the crossbar.
Detroit City was playing gritty defense throughout the half as San Antonio FC saw themselves with the ball inside of the Le Rouge penalty area in the 16th minute and shot a dangerous ball at Steinwascher who stood tall to make the save. On top of scoring the only goal of the game at that point, Simonsen was making plays on the other side of the ball, shutting down the runs of multiple SAFC attackers 10 minutes after the Steinwascher save.
After a scrappy first 45 minutes from both sides, the first yellow card of the game was given to San Antonio defender Shannon Gomez during extra time of the first half.
Steinwascher continued his clean sheet six minutes into the second half as SAFC forward Niko Hansen had a one on one chance but was unable to send his shot over the keeper’s mit and into the goal.
The second yellow of the game came in the 75th minute as again it was issued to the away team. This time though it was rewarded to SAFC’s assistant coach.
Just two minutes later DCFC received their first yellow card as defender Michael Bryant latched onto a San Antonio attacker right outside the penalty box for just a bit too long.
More yellow cards were flying out on the field in extra time as midfielder Jorge Fernandez and defender Lamar Batista both picked up yellows following scrappy attempts at the ball.
While San Antonio kept attacking throughout the second half, none of their 13 shots on goal could break between the sticks. On the other hand for DCFC, they did not take a shot in the second half but a fourth shot was not necessary as the strike from Simonsen was all Le Rouge needed to seal their second league victory of the season.
Both the men’s and the women’s squads will be at home next weekend for a doubleheader. The men’s side will play host to Birmingham Legion FC at 4 p.m. before the women’s game.
