Kalamazoo, Michigan – After drawing nil-nil in their season-opening match against Flint City AFC last Saturday at home. Detroit City FC saw a similar outcome in a 2-2 match as they traveled across the state to face Kalamazoo FC at Mayors Riverfront Park Wednesday evening.
DCFC had some chances to get on the board in the first 10 minutes of the game as forward Kenna White broke loose on the edge of the Kalamazoo FC penalty area in the third minute after a throw-in but was not able to put her shot past Kalamazoo goalkeeper Kendall Robertson.
DCFC goalkeeper Gabby Schriver was busy early on as she was able to notch a save from a Kalamazoo through ball that found its way into the penalty area in the 12th minute.
Le Rouge cashed in on their best scoring opportunity of the first half as White was fouled in the box in the 24th minute to set up her penalty-kick goal that snuck under the left glove of Robertson and into the back of the net to give Le Rouge its first lead of the season.
Kalamazoo FC was able to knot the score at one apiece in extra time of the first stanza as forward Kaema Amachree created some space in the box for her shot that found the back of the net just past the 45th minute.
Le Rouge started out attacking early in the second half as midfielder Syd Blomquist went on a run down the near side touchline, beating two Kalamazoo players before playing a cross which found fellow midfielder Kayla Whelchel who just missed her shot wide.
Schriver continued to stay busy in the second half as Kalamazoo FC started off strong early by putting pressure on the DCFC defense. She saw a shot that was drilled to her left but the third-year Le Rouge goalkeeper was able to make an incredible diving save to keep the score even at 1-1 10 minutes into the second half of play.
Kalamazoo FC took a one-goal lead in the 62nd minute after a run down the right side found the head of midfielder Cassidy Bell who pushed it past Schriver and between the posts, it was a well-placed ball and an even better-placed header from Bell.
Detroit City defender Emillie Gardner picked up the first yellow card of the game on a tactical foul in the 74th minute as she wrapped up a Kalamazoo FC attacker right before she could reach midfield as the hosts had numbers committed forward.
Le Rouge found themselves with another penalty opportunity as time started to become a factor when forward Kayla Addison was taken down inside of the box in the 83rd minute. Addison struck her penalty shot just well enough as the Kalamazoo goalkeeper got a touch on it but the penalty kick still found its way between the sticks to tie the score at two all.
That was all the scoring for the rest of the match by either side as DCFC was able to leave Kalamazoo with one point. That marks the second draw of the season in just as many games for Le Rouge.
