Detroit, Michigan — For the sixth time in the USL Championship this season. Detroit City FC loses by a scoreline of 1-0 in league play. This time to the visiting Tampa Bay Rowdies due to a late penalty kick converted by Charlie Dennis to ensure all three points were heading back to the Sunshine State.
Detroit City FC deployed an unchanged starting lineup from their 3-1 loss on Tuesday against Minnesota United FC of Major League Soccer in the US Open Cup. Despite the final score, Le Rouge would look positive for the first 60 minutes, carrying a 1-0 lead into the final third of the match but would be undone by a six-minute blitz from Minnesota which saw them score three goals,
Against the Rowdies, though, Le Rouge would struggle to break down the opposition backline despite looking positive on the ball in wide positions. Most notably through #19 Adrian Billhardt.
Detroit City FC’s best chance of the first half came when #27 Yazeed Matthews, receiving a header into the area from #12 Micheal Bryant, attempted an audacious bicycle kick, a powerful strike that just sailed over the crossbar. Sprinkled throughout were clever bits of passing play which opened up room for Detroit City FC but the final ball was just off at times.
Le Rouge was kept in the match by some great saves from goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher who ended the match with four.
Coming out for the second half, it began to become evident that a majority of the starting eleven had played three games in seven days as they began to fade in the match ever so slightly. Allowing Tampa Bay to ramp up its intensity.
This would culminate in disaster for Le Rouge as right before the final ten minutes of the match, a penalty would be rewarded to the visitors due to a handball called on defender Devon Amoo-Mensah. It would be converted by Tampa Bay’s Charlie Dennis.
Detroit City FC would have one final chance to steal a point at the death as forward Skage Simonsen, subbed in after 63 minutes, would turn and shoot following a corner but had to watch as his strike cannoned off of the crossbar. Fine margins.
Le Rouge is back at home again next Saturday, May 6 as FC Tulsa comes into town. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM and tickets are available at detcityfc.com/tickets with the match also available on ESPN+ and TV20 Detroit.
