Detroit, Michigan – For the second consecutive season, Detroit City FC is preparing for a US Open Cup Round Three matchup with a team from Major League Soccer, under the lights at Keyworth Stadium as Minnesota United FC comes into town for a 7:30 kickoff on Tuesday night. Streaming will be available on the Bleacher Report Football YouTube channel and tickets are still available at detcityfc.com/tickets.
Detroit City FC is looking to bounce back from a difficult start to their second season in the USL Championship. Le Rouge has proven so far that their tough-to-breakdown, hard-nosed backline is yet again a crucial part of their gameplan but they are just awaiting something to click amongst the attacking players. The positive signs continue to become more visible as the matches roll on.
Le Rouge is coming off a 1-0 loss to the Western Conference leaders and 2022 US Open Cup Finalists, Sacramento Republic FC. The Republic got off to an early lead, finding the back of the net on the brink of ten minutes on the clock. From there, Le Rouge looked dangerous on the counter-attack and would work hard to create goal-scoring opportunities with their high-pressing, looking to force a mistake out of the Republic.
Chances would come and go but they weren’t enough to find an equalizer with the match ending with a score of 1-0.
Minnesota United FC comes into Tuesday’s match off of a 1-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders FC in Seattle on Saturday night. Following their loss, the squad and staff traveled directly to Detroit to prepare for the Third Round Matchup.
They currently sit in 7th place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference, amassing 11 points from eight games with a record of 3-2-3.
Minnesota United FC is managed by Adrian Heath who’s been at the helm of Minnesota United FC since their inaugural season in Major League Soccer and boasts a win percentage of 38.43% since taking the job. He previously held coaching positions at Burnley, Sheffield United, two caretaker stints at Coventry City, and most recently Orlando City SC before landing the Minnesota job.
Tuesday’s visitors have twice reached the Round of 16 in the US Open Cup in 2022 and 2018. They were also the runners-up in the 2019 US Open Cup, losing 2-1 in the final to Atlanta United FC. The winner of Tuesday’s match is into the Round of 32, the summit that Detroit City FC reached last season before going out to Louisville City FC on Penalty Kicks at Keyworth Stadium.
Detroit City FC will remain at home following Tuesday’s match, welcoming the Tampa Bay Rowdies to Keyworth Stadium on 4/29 with tickets still available at detcityfc.com/tickets
