Following the completion of today’s friendly against Grand Canyon University, a match which Le Rouge won by a score of 3-1, Detroit City FC will return home from Tucson, Arizona as their time at the 2023 Desert Showcase has come to an end.
Today’s friendly against Grand Canyon University was delayed due to a frozen pitch. Despite the frigid field conditions, Le Rouge’s new signees came out hot in this one as two of the goals were scored by new faces to Detroit City FC (Skage Simsonsen from Loudoun United and Adrian Billhardt from South Georgia Tormenta of USL League One). The third goal from Le Rouge was scored by midfielder Maxi Rodriguez from the penalty spot, bringing us to the final score of 3-1.
Le Rouge’s first match at the Desert Showcase took place last Sunday on February 12 as they took on New Mexico United of the Western Conference of the USL Championship. New Mexico United took an early lead as Daniel Bruce was given the ball in the midfield and took an ambitious chance from distance which found its way into the back of the net.
New Mexico would maintain this lead into the half and would add a second goal very early on in the second half, giving Le Rouge quite the mountain to climb. Shortly after, forward Yazeed Matthews would get one back for Detroit City FC with a clever finish to halve the deficit. While in pursuit of the equalizer in the second half, Le Rouge was caught with too many bodies pushed up the field and would be punished for it as New Mexico scored yet again to regain their two goal lead. This match would end 3-1 to New Mexico United.
Upon returning home to Detroit, the first-team and those on trial will return to regular training before taking on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the Eastern Conference on Tuesday, February 21 in Brighton, Michigan. This match is closed to the public. Following their match against their Eastern Conference rivals, Le Rogue will take on the Michigan State University Spartans in a closed-door friendly at Keyworth Stadium on February 25.
Neither of these matches will be streamed but we will be providing in-match updates on our social media channels as well as post match updates on detcityfc.com.
