DETROIT, MI – Detroit City Football Club announced on Thursday that they have agreed to terms with Loudoun United FC for the loan of goalkeeper Joe Rice until the end of the season. Rice will be joining up with the squad ahead of this weekend’s trip to Colorado.
Rice played his college career at Virginia Commonwealth University and appeared in six matches for the VCU Rams. He spent a year as a redshirt player and his tenure lasted from 2014-2018. While he was studying at VCU, he played in the National Premier Soccer League locally for Chesterfield United FC and Virginia Beach City FC.
His professional career began in 2019 when he signed a professional contract with the Richmond Kickers of USL League One. He made three appearances between the posts for the Kickers in 2019, a season where Richmond came home in 9th place.
Following the 2019 season, Rice was signed by the New England Revolution and was sent to take the field for their USL League One development squad. Rice then stayed with the team and was announced as a returning player as they made the jump to MLS Next Pro ahead of the 2021 season. In total, Rice made 29 appearances over two seasons for New England Revolution II.
This season for Loudoun United FC, Rice made five starts and has made 20 saves. Loudoun United currently sit in 11th place, only amassing 24 points from 27 matches. Rice won USL Championship Save of the Week honors for Week 11 of the current USL Championship season.
Detroit City FC next takes the field on Saturday, September 10 on the road against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Weidner Field. Kickoff is slated for 9PM EDT. This match will be available on ESPN+ and MyTV20 in the Detroit area.
