DETROIT, Michigan – Detroit City FC travel to South Carolina this weekend to face off against the Charleston Battery of the Eastern Conference, who sit in 12th place. This will be their second matchup of the season as they played each other on March 19th, where City came up with 1-0 win on a goal from forward Antoine Hoppenot. The game is this Saturday August 27th at 8:00pm EST at Patriots Point Soccer Complex and It will be streamed on ESPN+.
This match will be Detroit City FC’s 100th under the leadership of Head Coach and General Manager Trevor James.
This past Saturday, City played at home at Keyworth Stadium against Louisville City FC, who currently sit at the top of the Eastern Conference in 1st place. City lost 1-0 on a penalty kick by defender Sean Totsch in the 66th minute. Just three minutes later, Louisville defender Wesley Charpie received a red card. Louisville then received their second red card of the game when forward Wilson Harris saw his second yellow card of the match in the 94th minute. Detroit had 57% of the possession but couldn’t capitalize. This was the second time this season that Detroit lost to Louisville City FC. The first time Le Rouge and Louisville City FC played in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup which was a 1-1 draw, but Louisville won on PKs (4-2) at Keyworth Stadium.
DCFC now has a 10-9-6 record, which has them currently sitting in 7th place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference, just 16 points off 1st place Louisville City. They are just one point off 6th place, behind Miami FC with a game in hand.
In the game versus Louisville, goalkeeper Nate Steinwasher made 6 key saves and he sits in 3rd place in the league for save percentage (76.2%). He has made 77 saves this season, which sits him in 2nd place league wide and has 7 clean sheets which ties him for 7th in the league.
Defender Matt Lewis scored his first ever USL Championship goal in Birmingham last week and made Team of the Week for the first time this year for Week 24. Also, forward Connor Rutz made ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10 and USL Fans’ Choice Goal of the Week for his spectacular bicycle kick goal against Birmingham last week.
Charleston Battery sits in 12th place in the Eastern Conference with 17 points and a record of 4-5-16. The Battery are currently on a two-match undefeated streak and their record from the last 5 games is 1-2-2. They won against the New York Red Bulls II (3-1) and they drew against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (3-3) and LA Galaxy II (1-1). They lost to Sacramento Republic FC (4-2) and Louisville City FC (4-1).
Forward Augustine Williams has played in all 24 games. He has 13 goals and is in 5th place in the league standings. Williams also has 52 shots, which has him sitting alone in 6th place in the league. He leads his team with 25 shots on target and with the most minutes played.
Midfielder Robbie Crawford has five assists on the season, good for 20th in the league standings. He started the season with Monterey Bay F.C. and joined Charleston in July after spending two seasons with them previously. He is in 4th place on the team with 16 chances created.
Next Saturday, City is back at home against the Indy Eleven. This game will be at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday September 3rd, with kickoff at 7:30pm.
