Detroit City FC claimed all three points in Indianapolis thanks to Connor Rutz’s second match-winning goal this week
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – On an early goal from forward Connor Rutz that held for the remaining 85 minutes of the game, Detroit City Football Club (9-6-4) tallied their ninth win of the season and earned an important three points on the road against the Indy Eleven (6-3-9) at Carroll Soccer Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday night.
City came out flying in the first half, scoring in the fifth minute to take an early 1-0 lead over Indy Eleven. Defender Deklan Wynne earned his third assist in his last three games, making an inch-perfect cross to a waiting Rutz who headed it cleanly past Indy goalkeeper Tim Trilk. The goal was Rutz’s second goal in the USL Championship this season, also his second of this week. A man in form.
Over the first 45 minutes of play, Detroit and Indy were even on possession and passes, but City dominated in the shots department and kept Indy Eleven to zero shots on target. Detroit managed to get seven shots overall and three shots on target.
The second half was more even, but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. City ended the game with 10 shots, including five on target after the final whistle blew. This was also Detroit City FC’s sixth clean sheet of the season.
With captain Stephen Carroll out of this game due to his injury on Wednesday night, defender Devon Amoo-Mensah was given the armband. Late into the first half, Amoo-Mensah went down with an injury and was subbed out of the game at half-time. Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher then took over the captain duties for the injured Amoo-Mensah.
The negative injury news aside, Le Rouge received a boost tonight as #15 Matt Lewis made his triumphant return after being injured in Detroit City FC’s May 7 trip to FC Tulsa. Lewis played the full 90’ and played a huge part in keeping a clean sheet in tonight’s match.
Head coach Trevor James was also missing from the bench tonight as he did not travel with the team to Indianapolis due to illness.
Le Rouge will be on the road again next Saturday July 16th, taking on Monterey Bay FC at Cardinale Stadium at 10:00pm in Seaside, California. Streaming will be available on ESPN+.
