FLINT, MICHIGAN– The Detroit City Football Club earned its first victory of the USL W League season, defeating Flint City AFC, 3-1. Le Rouge climbed to fifth in the division with the three points as forward Ellie Pool earned Woman of the Match honors, netting a brace.
Keeping the status quo for the season, Detroit City (1-2-2) struck first. In the eighth minute, Pool took a pass played by forward Brynn Gardner, shook off a defender to create space for a shot and found the upper right corner past the keeper.
DCFC enjoyed much of the possession to open the contest, creating multiple opportunities in the opening 20 minutes but could not extend its lead.
After a turnover from Le Rouge near midfield, Flint City (1-0-4) looked to counter. Jenna Blackburn found herself alone in the attack and let a shot go from just outside the penalty area. Blackburn’s ball split two City defenders and beat goalkeeper Deighton Wamer far post. The equalizer was Blackburn’s third goal of the season.
Le Rouge had a chance to take the lead into the locker room at the half when Pool was able to get a head on the cross from defender Madison Duncan – but the play would be whistled offsides, taking away the tally.
Goalkeeper Sophia Homan and Flint City were able to keep Detroit City at bay for most of the second half until the 76th minute.
Forward Kenna White was able to gain possession amid the chaos of a corner kick and take a shot that was ultimately deflected back to her, giving her a second chance at the net. White was able to capitalize and put Detroit City up 2-1 with her first of the season.
After a tough battle, defender Alia Fredericks got the ball up the field and sent it off to White for the shot, but she passed it off one more time to Pool who finished it off for her second goal of the day, putting Le Rouge up 3-1 at the 85th minute and ultimately securing the win.
Detroit City will finish its four-game road stint on Wednesday when DCFC travels to take on AFC Ann Arbor. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
