MIAMI, FLORIDA – Forward Antoine Hoppenot’s fourth goal of the season put Detroit City Football Club ahead until The Miami FC netted an equalizer five minutes into stoppage time on Wednesday night at FIU Stadium.
City (6-3-2) had the game won until a great effort from Miami (4-3-4) forward Adonijah Reid in the final moments of the match, making centerback Michael Bryant go by and sending it off the outstretched left hand of goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher to the near post.
The Miami FC controlled much of the possession early and sent a pair of chances off target in the opening 10 minutes.
Le Rouge scored first for the eighth time this season – sixth time in league play. Forward Connor Rutz played a ball from Steinwascher forward to Hoppenot. Hoppenot took it into the penalty area before sending forward Pato Botello Faz into the six-yard box, but Botello Faz played it back to Hoppenot who beat the keeper with a rocket of a strike to the far post in the 22nd minute.
In the 57th minute, City looked to double its advantage and it was once again the combo of Botello Faz and Hoppenot going back to work. Botello Faz played a cross from the far side of the field and found Hoppenot just on top of the six-yard box who put it in the back of the net, but his brace would be waived off with the offsides flag raised.
Miami led in the shot department with 17 and six on target. Detroit only had 11 shots in comparison and just a pair on frame. Miami took a slight lead in possession through 90 minutes, controlling 52.4% of the play.
For the first time this season in USL Championship play, Detroit City FC did not earn all three points while scoring first. Le Rouge does remain unbeaten under Trevor James while netting the first tally, moving to 36-3-0 since 2019.
This Saturday, Le Rouge returns home to host Atlanta United 2. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm ET at Keyworth Stadium. Tickets are available at tickets.detcityfc.com. This will be the second meeting between the sides this season, as DCFC defeated Atlanta 4-0 on April 9.
