Match Highlights
DETROIT, Michigan– The chance to advance to the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ended tonight in a heartbreaking penalty kick loss for Detroit City FC against their USL Championship League foe, Louisville City FC at Keyworth Stadium.
City hit the scoreboard first on a penalty kick from midfielder Maxi Rodriguez at 14′. Forward Francis Atuahene drew the PK as he was pulled down to the right of the net after cutting inside and dribbling beyond a Louisville City FC defender.
Louisville hit back with a goal of their own at 24′, from a corner kick. There was chaos in front of the net prior to the goal, with Louisville having multiple opportunities before forward Wilson Harris, the teams leading goalscorer, connected on a loose ball with his left foot for the goal.
The first 45 minutes of play ended 1-1 draw with Detroit City FC having the majority of the chances. After 90 minutes, both teams were kept off the scoreboard in the second half. Louisville dominated possession, controlling 61% of the play, and led with 13 shots, including 3 on target. City ended fulltime with 8 shots and 4 on target.
30 minutes of extra time had chances at both ends of the pitch. Nate Steinwascher came up with a huge save on a shot in close by Louisville forward Enoch Mushagalusa to keep City in the game. Minutes later, late substitute Pato Botello Faz had a clean shot right in front of the net, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Morton.
Louisville started the PKs with defender Sean Totsch beating Detroit goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher high above his head. Each shooter for Louisville was aiming for that same high spot in the net on their shots and was able to connect each time. Rhys Williams, City’s second shooter, was stopped by a diving Louisville goalkeeper Kyle Morton. The game came down to DCFC’s captain Stephen Carroll who had to score as City’s fourth shooter. Carroll’s shot flew over the net and City’s chances to move forward to the Round of 16 ended.
Up next for Le Rouge this coming Saturday May 14, they will be home for a USL Championship League game versus Loudoun United FC. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium in Detroit is set for 7:30 pm ET on TV20 Detroit and ESPN+.
