DETROIT, Michigan – The Detroit City Football Club is looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss against FC Tulsa last Saturday when they take on Louisville City FC in the Round of 32 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 10. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium is set for 7:30 pm ET on ESPN+.
Detroit City advanced to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup on April 19 when they defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1. This was DCFC’s first ever match and win over an MLS team.
Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez was responsible for both goals against the Columbus Crew that dug his team out of the 1-0 deficit they were in for most of the match. He tied things up in the 64th minute on a header off of a throw in from forward Antoine Hoppenot and then scored the game winning goal off a penalty kick in the 86th minute.
Forward Connor Rutz, Detroit City’s reigning Black Arrow award winner, has been vital to the club this season. Although he isn’t credited with much scoring in the stat sheets, he leads the team in distance covered per 90 minutes this season, and is a huge part of DCFC’s offense.
“It’s a big game, so I’m hoping the fans get up for it,” said Rutz. “We’re trying to get up for as much as we can and fight through and hopefully get a result and go on to the next round.”
Although injuries have plagued the team as of late, Rutz remains confident knowing that they have a bench of players ready to step up.
“We know it’s gonna happen,” he said. “It’s a long season, so we just gotta adapt. We have good players on the bench, good players ready to play, hungry to play, so we just need to adapt to each player’s style of play when they’re in and keep fighting.”
Louisville City is currently at the top of the Eastern conference standings of the USL with a 7-0-3 record while Detroit City is two spots below them in third place with a 5-2-2 record. This will be the first matchup of the season between these two clubs, but they will play each other twice in division play after Tuesday’s match.
Gates open at 6:30 pm on Tuesday and tickets are available at tickets.detcityfc.com.
