DETROIT, MICHIGAN – The Detroit City Football Club is set to open its inaugural season in the USL W League at Keyworth Stadium against the Kalamazoo Football Club after finishing last season with a 6-4-0 record in the UWS League. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7 on TV 20 and FOX 47 in Lansing and Jackson.
Forward Kenna White will return for her third season with Detroit City, finishing the 2021 season with four goals and an assist. White, who also plays for Bowling Green State University, will be joined by some familiar faces. Four fellow BGSU Falcons, Rylee Clark, Brynn Gardner, Emilie Gardner, and Ellie Pool have all signed with DCFC for the 2022 season.
Also new to the roster is defender Shannon McCarthy. The Brighton native is coming home after playing professional soccer in Kazakhstan for BIIK Kazygurt after stints in Japan and Sweden as well. Before she set her sights on the pros, McCarthy enjoyed a successful career at the University of Miami (FL). Her vast experience is expected to benefit the young team.
Veteran defender Madison Duncan is also returning to Le Rouge this season, providing them with experience and leadership as well. Like McCarthy she also played professionally overseas in the Czech First League and earned Detroit City’s Black Arrow MVP award in 2021.
“I’m so excited for this season to start,” said Duncan. “I think everyone knows the fans at Keyworth Stadium are insane and super loud and super supportive, so I know all of the new players are excited as well to play in that environment and see what it’s like.”
Kalamazoo FC will debut its women’s team this upcoming season. They recently announced the hiring of their new head coach Todd Wells in January. Wells was part of the KZFC men’s coaching staff before accepting the head coaching job on the women’s side.
After two years in the UWS, Detroit City will join KZFC as two of eight teams in the Great Lakes Division of the brand new USL W League set to begin play in May 2022. AFC Ann Arbor, Flint City AFC, Indy Eleven, Kings Hammer FC, Midwest United FC, and Racing Louisville FC round out the rest of the division.
Gates open at 6:30 pm on Saturday and tickets are available at tickets.detcityfc.com.
