DETROIT, Michigan – The Detroit City Football Club hits the road once again this USL Championship season, heading to Connecticut to take on Hartford Athletic at Trinity Health Stadium. Kick off is set for 7 pm ET on Saturday, April 23, on ESPN+ and locally on My TV 20 in Detroit and WSYM-TV Fox 47 in Lansing.
Detroit City (3-2-1 in league play) enters the weekend off one of the biggest wins in Club history, knocking off the Columbus Crew of the MLS, 2-1, to advance to the round of 32 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Le Rouge is one of five USL Championship teams left in U.S. Soccer’s national championship. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez earned Man of the Match plaudits, netting a second-half brace after the Crew’s Gyasi Zardes slotted a PK in the 7th minute. DCFC will face Louisville City in the next round at Keyworth Stadium.
Last time out in league play, it was forward Antoine Hoppenot that delivered the match winner off an assist from Rodriguez over Birmingham Legion. Hoppenot leads the team with three goals in USL play this season – Rodriguez has a total of three goals this season with two coming in Cup play.
Following Le Rouge’s 1-0 victory over Birmingham Legion on April 15, right back Rhys Williams and goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher earned league plaudits. Williams earned a spot on the team of the week- his second weekly honor – after another strong defensive performance, winning 14-of-20 duels and 7-of-8 tackles while making four interceptions and 15 recoveries. Steinwascher earned honorable mention making four stops – including a crucial one late for his 25th clean sheet in 40 matches since 2020.
Since Trevor James’ arrival in 2019, Detroit City FC has posted a mark of 26-6-1 on the road. The only loss came at the start of this season – a 1-0 decision at San Antonio to kick off Le Rouge’s time in the USL Championship.
Hartford Athletic is 0-1-4 after five games played in the USL Championship and is at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings in 14th place. They have only scored four goals – coming from three different players and an own goal – and conceded nine. This Saturday is Hartford’s second home game of the season and enter on a three-game losing streak, falling most recently to the New York Red Bulls in the Open Cup on April 20, 2-1.
