KENNESAW, GEORGIA – With goals from four different players, Detroit City FC (2-1-2) notched its first road win as members of the USL Championship, 4-0, at Atlanta United 2 (2-0-4) on Saturday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia.
City controlled the first 45 minutes of the game, ending the first half with a 3-0 lead. The first goal came at 23 minutes in from a set piece. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez perfectly placed the ball across the box and it was headed down by centerback Devon Amoo-Mensah to centerback Stephen Carroll’s waiting right foot.
Ten minutes later, in a footrace down the right side of the field, right back Rhys Williams won the ball and found forward Antoine Hoppenot for the header finish. Hoppenot moments later set up Le Rouge’s third tally of the half, playing a beautiful back heel flip to forward Pato Botello Faz for his second tally of the league season.
DCFC continued to control play in the second half – extending its lead with a strike from midfielder Michael Bryant – his first as a member of the Club. Left back Deklan Wynne played a ball across the box to Bryant, who took a touch before placing the ball far post.
Atlanta’s best chance of the game came at 59′ of the second half when the side rang one off the post.
The game became more physical in the second half, including two red cards being handed out to Atlanta United 2.
Le Rouge held Atlanta to 0 shots on target for the entire game while City had 5 – Detroit City totaled 14 shots to United’s seven. This was the first fixture in 2022 that DCFC hasn’t won the possession battle – with Atlanta United 2 controlling the ball for 51.2% of the contest.
Next up for Le Rouge is a visit from Birmingham Legion on Friday, April 15. It will be the Club’s first-ever nationally broadcast game, with the match airing on ESPN Deportes. Kick is set for 7 pm ET.
