DETROIT, Michigan – The Detroit City Football Club kicks off its 2022 home slate on Saturday, March 19, against the Charleston Battery. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck is set for 4 pm on ESPN+ and locally on TV20 and FOX47 in Lansing and Jackson.
Detroit City opened its tenure in the USL Championship last week with a 1-0 loss at San Antonio. The defeat was City’s first on the road since July 7, 2018, and first under head coach Trevor James. Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher garnered Man of the Match plaudits, making a league-high five saves highlighted by turning aside a penalty kick in the 17th minute. Le Rouge outshot SAFC, 10-9, and won the possession battle but couldn’t find an equalizer.
Charleston opened the campaign at home against FC Tulsa, claiming an early three points thanks to a first-half tally from new signee Augustine Williams. Williams was named as an honorable mention to the league’s Team of the Week. The Battery finished 10th in the eastern conference a season ago with a mark of 10-7-15. Conor Casey – the former U.S. National Team member – was named the head coach during the offseason.
The fixture pits the oldest continuously run club in the USL Championship with one of the newest clubs to the league. Charleston joined the USL in 2005 and has been playing since 1993. Le Rouge began in 2012 and enters its first season in the USL.
Through week one of the 2022 season, three Le Rouge players earned ratings inside FotMob’s Top 100 players in the USL Championship. Steinwascher came in at No. 7 with a rating of 8.49 after also earning USL Championship Team of the Week honors. Defender Rhys Williams’ efforts in San Antonio landed him 59th in the league with a rating of 7.61 while centerback Matt Lewis’ rating of 7.29 currently sits 98th amongst all players in the USL Championship.
Detroit City is 6-3-1 all-time in home openers, with a mark of 3-2-1 in home openers since moving to Keyworth in 2016 from Cass Tech.
