Chula Vista, CA (October 16, 2021) – Detroit City FC traveled to California to take on bottom of the table 1904 FC for their second matchup of the NISA fall season on Saturday night.
The first half was a story of last-second defending from 1904 FC. The Le Rouge attack was potent at creating good looks, but 1904’s keeper made multiple point-blank saves and was bailed out by a defender’s goal-line clearance to keep things scoreless.
After not converting their close chances in the first half, City was hungry to find their goal in the second and would do so early on.
Just five minutes after halftime, City’s possession led to #19 Pato Botello Faz on the left side of the box who then squared a ball to the face of goal where #11 Connor Rutz was crashing into the box to get on the end of it and put Le Rogue up 1-0. [VIDEO HERE]
However, the lead wouldn’t last. In the 61st minute, 1904 sent a dangerous cross into the box and their attacker rose high and sent his impressive effort into an unreachable corner of the goal.
With the game tied, City upped the pressure and earned a foul in 1904’s half. #22 Kevin Venegas sent in a perfectly placed ball and #5 Stephen Carroll rose above the scrum to send a powerful corner into the back of the net. [VIDEO HERE]
There was a bit of back and forth play to see out the rest of the match, but ultimately Le Rouge would hold onto their one goal advantage to earn all three points on the night.
Detroit City FC, now 10-2-1 on the season, will head to California for a rematch with 1904 FC. The fixture will take place on Saturday, October 16, 2021, with kickoff set for 9:00 pm ET.
