Hamtramck, MI (September 18, 2021) – Detroit City FC returned to Keyworth Stadium for a weekend matchup against Stumptown AC.
The first half of the match was a scoreless one with few opportunities for either side. And despite the lack of chances, there were plenty of fouls called on both sides that contributed to a stop and start first 45 minutes.
The second half was much of the same story with fouls called regularly called every couple of minutes.
With the many fouls being called, free kick opportunities were common. And in the 52nd minute, #23 Darwin Espinal sent a direct free-kick attempt banging off the outside of the post.
Eventually, in the 80th minute, Stumptown scored first off of a corner kick.
City sent on a few fresh legs and the team upped their pressure afterward. They started to win balls which led to possession in dangerous areas. The subs of #19 Pato Botello Faz and #2 Jimmy Filerman sent some life into the offense. But despite looking dangerous in the final minutes, City wouldn’t find the goal they needed to avoid the loss.
Tonight’s loss is the first loss for Detroit City FC in 362 days after they enjoyed an unbeaten Championship-winning run in the NISA Spring season, Legends Cup, and 2020 tournament.
Detroit City FC, now 6-1-1 in the fall season, will return to Keyworth Stadium to face off against LA Force on Saturday, September 25 with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
