Hamtramck, MI (September 11, 2021) – Detroit City FC returned to Keyworth Stadium to take on New Amsterdam FC after a successful two-game road trip that saw them earn six points and stake a healthy claim on the top spot of the NISA fall table.
New Amsterdam would score first in this match off of a quick counterattack in just the fifth minute of action. After a few quick passes, NAFC was through on goal, and #1 Nate Steinwascher wasn’t able to stop the one-on-one attack.
But it wouldn’t take long for Le Rouge to respond. After earning a corner kick in the 13th minute, #10 Cyrus Saydee sent a ball into a dangerous area at the back post where captain #5 Stephen Carroll was able to out-muscle his defender and head the ball into the back of the net. [VIDEO HERE]
With the score evened up at 1-1, both teams earned looks at goal in between multiple stoppages for injured NAFC players – none of which ended up having to leave the match. With four minutes of stoppage time added, City pressured the New Amsterdam defense up until the referee blew his whistle to send the teams back into their respective locker rooms for halftime.
Head coach Trevor James made one change to his side after halftime with #17 James Vaughan entering the match for #99 George Chomakov.
After struggling to keep momentum in the first half, City began to capitalize on winning their 50/50 duels and second balls which led to Detroit gaining possession in dangerous areas of the pitch.
Eventually, the pressure would mount and City would score the second goal they were hungry for.
City won the ball back in midfield and #12 Tendai Jirara progressed the ball forward into the final third. Despite being challenged, Jirara was able to beat his defender and keep the ball in play right on the touchline. With the ball in the box, Jirara played the ball to #11 Connor Rutz whose initial shot was deflected, but on the follow-up attempt, Rutz was able to score on an incredible bicycle kick. [VIDEO HERE]
With the lead City’s goal became to keep NAFC off the board and they would do just that in the final 25 minutes.
Detroit City FC, now 5-1-0 in the fall season, will head to Maryland midweek to face off against the Maryland Bobcast on Wednesday, September 15 with kickoff set for 7:30 pm ET.
